I was recording last night, and when I switched to input B on the MR8, I could not get a level. I tried with channels 2-8, nothing. Input A was working fine. Is it because I was running out of the "mixer out" on my mackie?

I'm probably missing something obvious (I hope).

that should work fine while an aug out might be post fader,

i have accidently moved the mic swithc button, while hooking up channel b, and couldnt get any input until i cought it...maybe????

Hi cellardweller -

I had the same problem trying to record a drum machine in stereo - Input B was giving me no level and I though I had blown a channel on the drum unit. Turns out I had set the Input B trim pot to LINE, which really knocks the signal down on the MR-8. (Must have mistaken it for a pan knob ;-> )

Thanx for the thought, but I turned the trim 360 degrees. It gave me a peek light, but no audible signal. The bar didn't even move either...

I'm home now. I'll get to fiddling (not literally of course) here shortly. I've a few matters to settle up on first...

well, maybe i am reading this wrong. but

you say "when i switched to channel b"

you can not use channel B all alone. the only time you get a signal into the b side is when it is used as a pair. channel 2 alone, channel 3 alone. or channel 4 alone wont do it. you would have to use 1/2, or 3/4 or 5/6 or 7/8.

the mixer out, tape out. main out, aux sends, from the mackie should all work. you just have to use b as the right side of a stereo pair.

That is exactly what I was doing... I rarely record 2 tracks at a time. I haven't found much difference in the sound quality of my drum machine when left and right are run to inputs A and B.

Now that I think about it, I'm not even sure why I wanted to switch to inputB...?
Maybe just to make sure it still worked..? (he he)

Good to know that there is nothing wrong with my MR8, and that most of my woes are probably user induced.

I've recorded on input B but only seems to record on tracks 6 and 8 when recording on one track. BUT it will erase data on tracks 5 or 7 when you record on 6 or 8. --- My two cents.

you are absolutely right...
5 and 6 are a pair.....5 is assigned to a, 6 is assigned to b. same way with 7/8. 7 is left, a, and 8 is right b. when NOTHING is plugged into a, and b has an input, since they are a linked pair, a records nothing (which erases what was there) and b records the program material.

since you cant pick and choose the 5/6 ot 7/8 split, you take both. if left has no program material...it records empty.

I finally got around to recording my "fake" bass part last night and was noticing what you guys just said. I recorded the first "fake" bass part on 5, and was hoping to double it on 6. As it was, obviously, 5 was recorded over so I doubled track 6 on track 8.

I really wish I had a bass...

I'm using my drum machines' bass, and it sounds okay except for the decay of the note. Some preset bass' has a quick decay, great for plucky fast parts, but when sustain is needed, it sucks. Same hold true for bass with sustain when you need to "pick" fast.

There is no lesser of evils, they both suck!!!

May be veering off topic, but does anyone have recommendations for a sub-200 dollar bass? Last time I tried some, there was a huge difference in quality between Fenders as I moved up the price scale. I asked a great bass player in town (has stuff custom made at Fender, etc.) and he said that Ibanez makes the best "cheap" bass.

I should clarify that, instead of saving my money for substantial purchases like the abovementioned, I nickel and dime myself to death. The nickel and dime purchases, fortunately, are finite. I need to get a couple more "cheap" mics, a few more XLR/1/4inch,etc cables, audiophile 2496, and probably a couple other low to medium cost things, then I'll be able to buy a bass and/or keyboard.

Believe it or not, I have overcome the infamous G.A.Syndrome, these are really minimal requirements IMO.

Ahh, who am I kidding, I'm possessed to spend....

I'm driving up this weekend to pick up a "Case" of mics, cables, and other assorted gear from the late 60's through about 1975 when his band broke up. I can't sleep!

mrx, I can't speak for Ibanez basses, but I have an Ibanez guitar and I like it pretty well. Can't say I love it, and I think I overpaid, but it's a pretty decent sounding guit. I have just recently started getting used to playing it. I wasn't immediately impressed with it due to my own relative naivette at the time or purchase...

My wife and I lived for three years in Lincoln while I attended grad school there. We drove through Decatur frequently on our way to Sunday morning pulpit assignments. I almost sought a church position in Decatur.
The only part of Decatur we found to be unpleasant was driving over by the Staley's plant. The stench of rotting corn was unbelievable.

I may offer an unfair and somewhat limited view of Decatur. It has it's nicer areas of course, but overall, and especially in the music/band scenes, the utter depravity, lack of anything resembling morality on any level, and rampant use of "hard" drugs, is enough to taint/discourage anyones' view.

There also are a serious lack of jobs in the area. For some reason this place can't support any type of decent night life scene due to the undesirable elements showing up with crack/handguns/C-4 and ruining it for everyone.


It's probably not THAT bad, but per-capita (sp?), the crime rate is elevated. In the 90's, David Letterman said "if you wanna get away with a murder, move to Decatur Illinois", as then the current 9 out of 10 murders were unsolved. This has put considerable pressure on the police force, who now are more numerous than Chicago PD (per capita ,sp?).

I grew up with this guy, and I admit he was never right in the head. Recently the police were called to his house for a domestic disturbance. He was shot dead in front of his children. I never heard anymore details other than this.

Okay that's enough. Point being, I probably blow it out of proportion, but then again....

We didn't spend enough time to really get acquainted with Decatur. If we went out of Lincoln for shopping or a meal we usually went to Springfield or Bloomington.
Although the best Chinese restaurant we found during our time in Illinois was in Decatur in the same strip mall as the north Wal-Mart.
