Need advice on inspecting an 8 track!

I have a chance to pick up an Otari 5050MKIII 1/2" 8 track - he wants $1000 but I'm sure it can go down significantly. It's been given the once-over recently and he says it works fine. So, when I check it out, what specifics things should I look for? Obviously head wear, the wear on the metal and rubber parts, etc. Can someone detail specifics step by step in what to look for? You can be as anal as you want to be....
