What is MIDI? What is Sequencing?

I am a piano player, and have been reading about and am interested in the motif. I have a vague idea of what midi and sequencing is, but I'm not too clear on it. From what I know, though, I think I would definitely make good use of it. So could someone give me a complete explanation of what it is, and what it is used for, so that I can decide if I need this. Please.

Is midi and sequencing even related?
