Gibson? Who said Gibson?

Mine is Epiphone Les Paul Custom flametop ($500 used + $70 Epi hard case). The only difference from Gibson's is rosewood fretboard (instead of ebony). I installed Classic '57 and Classic '57+ in bridge (another $200 for both). This guitar is SO sweet now! I like using thinner strings on the Paul, though. I have .08-s on it now and love it. I use .09-s on my strat now.

I would have a Gibson LP Custom if I could, but I can't afford it, cuz I also need to have basses, drums, etc. This is too close to spend all that money.

I hate to burst the old Epiphone bubble, but there is A LOT more diffrence between an Epiphone LP and a Gibson LP than just the fretboard wood.

No bubble bursting here, Brad. I never meant to say that they're EXACTLY the same. I understand that the extra $2000 (roughly) is not just for "made in USA", "Gibson" and hand applied bindings and inlays (although mostly it is . If I played only guitar and only needed to have 1 or 2 instruments, I'd definitely get a Gibson Custom. Thanks for that info, though

P.S. Gibson Classic '57 pickups are sweet!

I got a 1954 that was "Standard-ized" in the 60s so the high-end collectability isn't there, but my GOD, the tone of that old wood is unreal!
It was originally a gold top with a stop tailpiece and P90s, but someone made it into a "Standard" sunburst in the late 60s modified with tune-o-matic bridge and PAFs.

It looks a lot like Jimmy Page's 58. The guitar sounds a lot like Gary Moore's 59 Les Paul on "Still got the Blues." A great crunch for rhythm and that smooth, thick creamy lead tone. It's the best sounding LP I've ever heard, and everyone I've ever played with seems to agree. It sounds so good that I can get away with light strings (9 to 36) and still have plenty of beef in the sound coming out of the guitar.

'98 Les Paul Standard Plus, heavily figured honeyburst. Play it thru a Marshall 60W Valvestate amp. At one time I had a blond Les Paul Custom (I think it was a '76) but I sold it about 10 years ago...for about $500.

I had a small Marshall Lead 20 with the LesPaul screaming through a Radio.. oohh... Shack something or other. Krokus was popular then. Ratt was just born, and this god awful thing called pimples. Pimples and Picks. Silver Bullets cost around $3. Pimples were free.

I have a '79 black beauty with 3 pickup's and it weighs more than I do (got it used for $525 8 yrs. ago) - but PLEASE does anyone else have trouble keeping their's in tune??? I can NOT have both a C and an F chord simultaneously in tune- should I get new frets or throw it away or what?? It is *very* embarassing to have such a nice guitar that won't stay in tune for the length of one song...

My '73 Deluxe is not red sparkle. The top is solid red. The color of red on the edges of a red sunburst. You can see the wood grain through it.

Sounds like you have a intonation problem or possibly the strings are binding in the nut. The intonation needs to be checked with a strobe tuner. The nut requires either graphite powder or a good gutitar tech.
My '69 custom has bone bridge pieces instead of the metal ones. This seems to give it a more mellow tone.

Stumbling upon this thread prompted me to look for the beast. Yeppers, I still got it - 1961, PAF's, sideway wammy, SG body. Of all the pauly's that have come & gone in my life this one still remains.

I always have my 70's standard (with Seth Lovers) around, but don't forget Les Paul Jrs! Nothing screams like that lo-mass wood with a P-90!! I have a '55 that I got in a pawn shop in Texas for $200 (!!!) years ago and now a Jr. reissue (which also sounds amazing!!)

I have a black beauty also, I know what you mean about the weight-(I went through a couple of straps (no strats) before buying one that would hold the fuckin' thing without ripping them.

About the tuning-I don't have the same problem though the G, B strings are a little tepremental (generally though not within one song).

Historic Collection '59 Plaintop reissue. Not flamey, just a plain looking '59 that I probably paid too much for when I got carried away at a guitar show. I had played only my Strat for years. This one's very loud, much more resonant. Classic '57 PAFs. Through a Lexicon Signature 284 recording amp, a solid state stereo power amp and a Marshall 4 X 12 stereo cabinet. Cuts through bass and drums like a knife.

This is a reply to David B.........I also have a modified
"Flame Top" Paul.It was the last of the '57 goldtops with
P-90 pickups,and someone had a gorgeous '59 top put on it
and added humbuckings.While I would have never done these
mods myself,I must admit this guitar is incredible!And yes,
it has that light dry wood sound.I did own an actual '59 flametop before,and while it was a great axe,this one is as good or better......which shows the cosistency of all the
Gibson stuff back then.I took the DiMarzio PAF pickups out
and put in a pair of early patent number pickups,which are my favorites.......they have a little more top end than
PAFs.These are from about '63.Of course,the two piece top isn't centered,because goldtops were a solid color,so who
would notice?And all through a '59 Bassman......aaahh,
