m-Audio Audiophile USB

(Sorry about the cross post, but I'm using Cakewalk and n-Track)

With an m-Audio Audiophile USB audio interface attached to my laptop, the windows audio mixer no longer appears (I get the 'reinstall mixer' message that appears to be pretty common, but no help is offered from Microsoft or the vendor.)

The interface plays back audio, but the problem is there's no way to set recording level - in Sound Forge and n-Track it records, but very low, yet in Cake Pro Audio 9 arming a track for record causes the Cake mixer VU meter to pin at maximum level and nothing records.

Any ideas? Thanks!

hi, mrx. It would help if we knew what you'd tried. This certainly sounds like a driver conflict to me. I'm not familiar with the m-Audio, but the first thing I'd try is an UnInstall of the m-Audio driver, RegClean, reboot, and a ReInstall to see if by change the original install didn't go well (it happens more often than you might think).

I'd hate to think that the m-Audio driver screwed up Windows, but it sounds like that's a possibility. XP offers a Repair function that has fixed problems for me in the past. But you don't say which OS you're running. Let's hope a Windows repair isn't necessary.

It turned out to be a case of terrible, incomplete documentation (again...).

Turns out the mAudio does not use windows mixer, so there's no way to control record level, short of using a pre-amp. The Cakewalk issue was due to a conflict with the internal sound chip on the laptop. After geting all that squared away I actually got a track recorded (of course the device does not allow monitoring of the input signal). I recorded my next song, hit play back, and heard nothing but distortion, like a and amp with a fried speaker. At this point I'm watching the clock for the open of Guitar Center so I can return this turd and pick up a standalone recorder.

I'd never trade mixing in n-Track, but this computer recording is for the birds.

The cross post police are not to be taken lightly my son.

They will materialize at your doorstep in the middle of the night to wisk you away to "re-education camps".

My adivice: Tread carefully, do not cross-post.
