Vf8/vf16
A local music store is going out of business and has VF's at mail order prices (VF8 = $489, VF16 = $699)
At $699, the VF16 looks like a great deal compared to the new Tascam/Boss/Korg 16 tracks. Anyone have experience using the SCSI port (ZIP drive, etc.) to share wavs with a PC? Is this even possible? Thanks |

If these are prices without the built-in CDR, then I'm not sure that they're such good buys. Are these the VF08/16 or the Vf80/160? The VF80/160 are the latest incarnations and without the CDR the VF80 commonly sells for $499. ($699 withCDR); the VF160 sells with a CDR for $850.
These are great machines, and they stack up very well against the competition. |

They are the 8/16, no CDR (which is not such a big deal when using a PC to mix/burn). I like the SCSI port on the 16, as it allows easy wav transfer with a jaz drive.
I was surprised to see how small the 16 is - pictures make it look like a huge piece of furniture. |

There is a special site: vf16.com. The folks there can fill you in to the max. Here's what I know. The VF16's are nice machines, but the hard drives are relatively small and noisy (noticeable whirring noise). I realize that sometimes every penny counts, but if it was me, I'd get a new VF160w/CDR at $850. It now ships with a 30gig hard drive, and it's very quiet. If you have more questions, I'd be glad to help.

Thanks -
I've wasted so much time with crap that my next purchase is going to be something that will last. I checked out that site and it looks like the SCSI port allows wav import/export. |

If you're counting on using the SCSI port, note that the SCSI card is an option and probably doesn't come with the unit! The card for the VF08 is $89, which could impact the bottom line.

vf160
Comes with a built in scsi port and internal CD burner, so you have two methods of transferring to PC.
I love this machine, even though I bought it nearly 2 years ago for £999 (around $1600) !!!! I don't regret it. So reliable, and does what it says on the tin. I haven't noticed a noise problem with the hard drive. The main complaints most people have are with the limited low end EQ, but again it hasn't bothered me, I record a bass guitar and it sounds like a bass guitar, same for kick drum - what more do i want? Thay are great value now, until a 24 track version comes along, but you'll have to wait until they are afordable to people on a very limited budget.
