Cakewalk Apps Not Launching?

I installed a copy of Sonar 3 Producer just to try it out and everything seemed to work fine during the setup, however when I double-click the desktop icon nothing happens. There are no error messages or alerts, it just does nothing.

For a test I installed a friend's copy of Cakewalk's Home Studio 2004 and it behaved exactly the same way. Double-click and nada.

Has anyone heard of this happening with some systems? Is there something I should have that I don't or something I might look for that might be conflicting with it? Here are my specs:

Win Xp Pro
Soundblaster Live Digital (sad, I know)
P4 1.3Ghz w/640MB RAM

Can't find anything else out there, would appreciate any troubleshooting suggestions...

Thanks.

Question

What if you run the program fom it's installation folder? (double click the .exe file)...

Are you sure your system out of viruses?

Sounds like you may not have the required version of DirectX installed.

Try installing DirectX 9 from the Micro$oft website.

do you have an ati video card?

the driver that ati installs, called "rage/radeon wdm theatre xp" or something like that, caused sonar 3 to act the same way on my machine, i disabled it under sound, video etc. in device manager and it's (sonar 3) worked fine since.

hope this helps

Ah, there's a problem with the ATI WDM drivers. You need to update to version 3.1, but since you've installed the demo (hopefully) you're out of luck...

Or you could try to upgrade the ATI drivers.

a little more detail

in my experience, it wasn't the actual ati video drivers, i think that the "rage/radeon theatre xp...whatever" drivers are related specifically to the tv output hardware or another of their peripheral devices, i have the whole tv setup bundle, so when i disabled that specific device in device manager, the video continued to funtion well, the only difference was that sonar would load. just a note, i did experience the problem with the newest downloadable catalyst driver combo...

You guys are geniuses!

I had actually installed a 9600 All-in-Wonder card a few weeks ago. I went into the system settings and diabled the WDM Theatre XP Audio and Video devices and voila, works like a charm.

Thanks for the help guys, it's appreciated.

Correct! But those drivers are still WDM...

Actually, it was the Rage audio driver and with Sonar 3.1 it doesn't matter.
