My Orban designed dbx 242 arrived today....

About to go fart with it with a direct bass sound via Great River NV --> 242 EQ --> monitors and see how it does.

Initial impression: Seems awfully lite, as if there is actually nothing inside it at all. Pretty shallow too, only about 3 inches deep I think.

More to come.

That's cool, man.

On a related note, my coffee filters (Mr. Coffee designed) just arrived about a half hour ago . . . after I went and picked them up at the store. So anyway, I can understand the feeling, as I am equally excited about a purchase. My prospects of a fresh cup of brew, complete with unspoiled 2% milk have got me feeling quite optimistic. Today is going to be a good day indeed.

Monoprix has started selling microfiltered milk. It's not pasteurized. Highly interesting.

Now I'd just like to find milk that is not homogenized too.

I think we should at least try and keep this a bit more on-topic and focus on the filters.

Seriously, man, it's all about the filter. You can have your fancy non-homogenized micro-whatever creamer, pal, but if you're still using those tan cone-shaped filters, forget it. You might as well be drinking dirt.

Assholes!

Ok, I tried it extensively on a bass that I like but dont like the sound of. Never bright enough, and kinda muddy. I spent some time tweaking the bottom, then trying to find where the weird boxy mud was coming from, found it, got it out, POW, nice.... then moved on to trying to get some brightness into it, some life, some snap. Plugs never seem to accomplish it. Well, I got it with the dbx. I now found a sound I like a LOT with this thing that I couldnt find otherwise. Much bigger, snappier, better.
I am now on a mission to find 2-3 more of em. If you have one for sale or know where one is, shoot me an email.
A best buy for sure.

Yea, yea . . . you reviewers are all alike. Never have anything negative to say about anything.

So you plugged it in and it worked and it was wonderful and you have to buy like 100 now and bla bla bla bla bla bla.

Just for once I wanna' hear you guys say: "I tried the ___ on a number of sources, and I must say I was quite impressed at how equally adept it was at literally sucking the life out of everyone one of them, right down the list."

Allright tunamunch...

I did notice that when I slammed the high shelf all the way up, and the high mid all the way up, I got a lot of hiss.

There, some negativity.

On the other hand, not near as much as I would have gotten from a Mackie or Soundcraft board.

I do intend to find at least another one to make a pair. Sell me yours. Now.

Well, I was one of the first to recommend the dbx 242 as a "best bang for the buck" unit so, unless I'm way off base, I don't think you'll see many negative reviews from most people that actually try it.

Chessrock, did you ever read my initial comments about the Marshall mics? I don't think I said anything nice about the Marshall 2001 or the 600, if I recall correctly.

Never mind, I found the original article:

"Marshall MXL-2001 $130??
Sorry, I can't find the MSRP right now. Harsh top end, thin bottom, compared to the TLM-103. It was a little warmer than the Nady SCM-1000, but the Nady had a smoother top end. The 2001 is everything that I don't like about all the really inexpensive large diaphragm condensor mics that I've listened to over the years, including the AKG C3000, the Oktava 219, and some of the early AT low cost units."

"Marshall MXL-600 $270
Veiled top end and exaggerated low-mid, compared to the Oktava MC-012. About 1 dB lower output than the Oktava. It just sounded very dull and lifeless. Very easy to bottom out as well."

I've also mentioned owning the AKG C3000, and only found two or three situations where it was the best choice. And I bought one of the first Alesis 3630 compressors, and didn't much care for it, and said so.

Uh . . . Alright.

How's it goin' Harvey?

Just so you know, I have a 242 and I think it rocks. I was just trying desperately to give our friend Tubedude a hard time. And to make a funny about how every time someone (like yourself) says something good about a used rack device, the price always shoots up at least 50 bucks on ebay. Stop it, will ya? (at least untill my auction ends, okay?) Hey, I'm just lookin' out for us, man! Keep these damn prices down!

Certainly let me know if you sell it.

How do you like the NV? Stil havent used it much either. I will soon, and its killing me.

haha. . . I got my 242 for $75. I think I actually might have restarted started the buzz about these in the first place with a post to Harveys forum a few months ago. I got 2 consecutive serial # Ashly Sc-50's for $75 each too! Then I got 2 Altec 1566a preamps for $300 each. I have been having good luck on E-bay lately. Well sort of. I got an 8 channel Soundcraft 200 with a screwed up master section that isn't doing me too much good. I didn't pay too much for it though either.

Beezo,

Send your Soundcraft 200 master section to Audio Upgrades for a fix and upgrade for a VERY acceptable price!

Are the SC-50's any good? Havent heard much about them but I've seen them.

As far as NV and kick/snare.... therein lies my problem. Overheads with the best pres, or burn them up on kick and snare? Hard call, but I'm thinking overheads because thats where the image and overall cymbal clarity comes from. If I had one more channel I would be set. IMO, kick can have whatevers left, you can always coax a kick sound out of something. Not so easy with snare and overheads.
How much was your NV?

So whos gonna sell me a 242 this week? Lets get to business...

I have thought about sending it to Jim Williams, but I just bought a Ramsa Wr-S4424, so I really am just going to dump it off to someone for like $150 or something. It is only the 8 channel version. The pres and EQ still work fine though.

Tubedude
Jay Hall over at Recpit tipped me off on them. I haven't had a chance to use them because I am going to a complete new setup and haven't gotten it fully in place yet. When I do I'll let you know if you'd like. Jay compares them to DBX 160's though.

Also check your e-mail
