Well, somebody has to say it, and it's hard when somebody has a new piece of gear. You won't find very many big time guitarists around here who have anything good to say about any Crate amp. I'm afraid it ranges from "I prefer..._________, to "Oh noooo, Mr. Bill!!!"
Here's an oddity, though.- I have an MXR15R, a little 15 watter that is a really useful studio amp for clean sounds only. It is the only Crate amp I have ever used that did not suck. If it produces the sound you need, cool, but you asked the question.-Richie

I've always thought Crate amps - especially the "acoustic" amps - have a nice useable clean tone.

On the distorted side, they always sounded "huge" in the room and "oh-my-God-that's-so-awful-I-can't-stand-it" in the mic.

But again, if it gives you the sound you're looking for, it's perfect.

Just my $0.02

Crate

I have the DXB112 and I find it an interesting 30 watt solid state simulator amp. It can be loud and it produces a wide variety of sounds for a combo amp. I use it combination with a 30 watt Marshall thru an A/B switch and a Wah pedal. That is until Tuesday or so, when I am getting some new stuff to experiment with. I sometimes use the Crate alone and there are some really good sounds on it. I used to have a friend with a Crate stack (late 80's) and it seemed to really rock. I recently played a Crate halfer and I liked the distortion sound with no pedals. Crate used to have some amps with celestion speakers that really sounded good. I personally think any amp with celestion speakers sounds better though. RMonroe is right about those big artists though - I have seen a good many live shows and don't ever recall seeing any of em use Crate. Ehh, strive to be different?

crate...

i use the crate vc6212... its one of the only crates i've liked, its not a high-gain amp but it does clean and mild crunch pretty well. it has deffinately benifited from a couple retubes... i replaced the factory sovtek 12ax7's with some jj electronics ones, and the warn groove tube el-34's with some shuguangs. the speakers are most likely the next victims, but maybe after i join what i call "the employed".
