Studio Pictures

Here is a picture of the exterior approach to my "studio." If the post works correctly, I'll add some details and descriptions.

The jpg shows the outside of a small 9x7 (appx.) "room-within-a-room" design that I put together several years ago. The studio area is floated and constructed of several layers, including drywall, insulation, plywood, soundboard (Homosote), and cedar. It's located inside a 20x20 garage which is airconditioned via a large-capacity wall unit. The wall unit is partially diverted and feeds both the garage and the studio. The garage itself is concrete block and the garage doors have been covered with insulation, drywall, soundboard, etc. to reduce outside noise. I have also sealed a window in a similar fashion. At the approach to the studio you can see an area where my instruments are kept.

The instruments shown here are (from L to R) a Taylor 414, a Tacoma Thunderchief ABG, a Weben Aspen mandolin, a Rickenbacker 360, a Gibson resonator guitar, and a Wildwood open-back banjo. Not shown: Kamaka Uke, Kurzweil stage piano, Morrell lap steel.

The inside of the studio is hard to capture without a wide angle lens, but here goes:

Things are pretty tight in here, but at least its quiet. Needless to say, I'm only recording myself--no standup bass, no drummers, no clients, no children. The mixing environment is not ideal but the room is fairly decent with the addition of bass traps and foam. I also use the room for vocals by adding some moving blankets to brackets attached to the ceiling (see attachment)

The brackets are actually garage door parts found at the Home Despot. You can also see the lap steel and a Shure KSM 27 covered by the patented Harvey Gerst dust cover! The KSM 27 is ok but I wish I had waited and spent a little more for the KSM 32--there's a good lesson.

Here is another lesson: Don't be a jack of all trades/master of none. My small studio would be 20x20 instead of 9x7 if I didn't like the smell of darkroom chemicals (see attachment).

Looks great Dwillis45! Nice gear, nice room, nice photos.

My dark room (BW) is in a few boxes in the attic.

Cheers
Kevin.

DWillis,

Nice setup. I do have a question about your speaker stands (I think those are Events on there - just like mine!)

What kind of stands are they, where did you get them and how much coin?

Update when you can.

Cheers,

Cuzin B

Cuzin B:

I bought the stands several years ago, but I believe they are still made by Quik Loc for well under $100.

Cuzin B:

Those are Auralex MoPads. I did the free acoustic consulting that they offer and they suggested some isolation pads under the monitors. So, I spent some MoMoney! I’m not sure if it helped a great deal but sometimes you just do things that seem to make theoretical sense.

You have a keen eye for detail! Can you spot any other toys? (The Sr16, thePOD, the Cajun accordion, The Epson 2200 printer, The VF-16, the DVD Recorder? Man, I think I have a bad case of acquisition syndrome!)
