monitor stands

I'm building a pair. The post part is a 5" square tube made out of 3/4" ply.The top and base are 12" squares of 1" cherry and over all height is 37".How much weight should I use in the post, my monitors are 30 lbs.I have lead discs to use for weight. Also should I need any internal bracing or baffling to keep the stand from resonating?

When I was thinking about making stands, it was recommended to me that the inside hollow section of the stand be filled halfway full with sand.

I thought of sand but, didn't like the idea of it ending up all over the studio. How many pounds did you use?

I didn't wind up building stands. But you only want to fill it half full because you want the weight to stay closer to the floor to maintain balance and not tip over.
