Couple of questions

Ok so In a couple of years I will be building a house nad it will be one of those houses with the double basement you know you go in the bansment and theres a level then you can go to the "lower" basement which is were I am planning to build a studio and heres my questions.

Should I have to rooms controal and then the sound area or should I have a 3rd room for doing vocals?

Computerbased like pro tools or more harware based? like one of those all in one counsels.

should I get one or 2 rack unit pre-amps for the mics or a sepreate one for each mic?

Now I was thinking of going pro tools mostly for upgrading and exspansion any one have any suggestion? any help would be great! Thanks!

I'll beat everyone else to the punch with the first answer.

And the answer to all your questions is:

"it all depends"....

It depends on what you want to accomplish with your studio (ie. is this just for your hobby to record just yourself, or do you want to record a 4-piece rock band, or are you into chamber music?).

It depends on what kind of music you want to record (isolation for a rock band requires different attention to acoustics and isolation than if you are doing acoustic only music).

It depends on how much money you want to spend (and the sky is the limit, and it never stops!).

It depends on how quiet your space will be in relation to the rest of the house (for vocals and acoustic instruments, especially, an isolation room will save a lot of headaches when using a quality microphone).

Going computer based with a Pro Tools (or other DAW) system versus stand alone components is a matter of personal preference. Some people like working inside the box (ie. on a PC), others prefer to have knobs a faders for the tactile feel of control. You can get excellent results either way, and there are numerous ways to have a hybrid system, as well, that incorporates the best of both worlds.

I hope this helps get your mind working on fine tuning your goals for a studio and keep on asking questions. The more detail you can provide about what you want to accomplish, the more useful the answers to your questions will be.

For just equipment I will have 100,000 to 150,000 to spend thats why I was thinking pro tools? one of the HD systems

As for what I will be recording it will mosly be a hoppy studio for myself and some friends and such and maybe some outside bands in which we would like to record

You say you have $150,000 to spend on equipment, yet it sounds like you lack the experience to operate a cassette based 4 track.

If you're 2 years away from begining construction, a little research on your part could go a long way.

I'd start with the SAE site, and a copy of F. Alton Everests book.
