That Beach Boys sound

ok, not strictly the beach boys...

can anyone give me some EQ or reverb tips on how to get that really old crappy mic sound? listen to the vocals on pet sounds, that's the sound i mean. quite crisp, more top end than bass i think. i have tried messing around with a 30 band EQ but can't seem to get it. any ideas?

also. anyone know how to get that old tape "wow and flutter" sound? will i need a pitch shifter or something?

I suggest going out and buying a crappy mic.

Most recording programs have a pretty basic "old 50's music" filter in their EQ settings. You could probably play with the settings of that filter along with an older sounding reverb to get what you're looking for.

Hi. i would guess they used a real good mike and high quality equipment and it just picks up everything- pins dropping, dogs barking, etc.. No eq .

I don't even have my turntable hooked up any more to freshen up on that one, but I can't recall anything particularly 'crappy' about the Beach Boys vocal sound.
Maybe you mean the sound you get listening to those CRAPPY "Digitally Re-mastered!!" (and fucked-with-with-pseudo-stereo-digital delay) CD's that are out there.

or you could use the phil spector method and record a bunch of musicians all at once in a really small room that way the sound reflects off all of the walls and bleeds its way into all of the mics
