Recording Guitar

Ok, so Im a drummer, but my guitarist just got a Carvin SX200 Amp. With this amp he can plug it in directly into my 4-track (Tascam 424MkIII), and it will record. However, would it be better to do that, or... to mic his amp?

Either way will work, depending on the sound you want. I worked with a bass player who had a Carvin amp that went direct. Overall, depending on the music one would sound better than the other.

Direct usually sounds like shit....
you won't really know until you try both though .....and perhaps a bunch of different mics to boot....that is if you have em'.....
an SM 58 usually is a good starting point...

Good luck,
Joe

I usually use 3 mics on the amp when recording, one on axis, another off axis, and a third about a foot away from the amp. Then I just blend them together with different volume levels and panning until I get the sound I want. Beats direct line-in recording virtually every time.
