Extremely Annoying Latency Issue

Hey guys, when I slap an mp3 song into one of the tracks in cool edit, and try to add a tambourine on another track it ends up recording just fine. But when I play the 2 tracks back, it seems as if the tambourine gets more and more out of time. I know that my timing is not off at all, and it gets to a point when it is a complete beat off. I have no idea what it could be. Maybe some buffer problem, but this is becoming rediculous. I have tried different things and nothing seems to work. Hopefully you guys can help. Thanks

By the way is there any way to reset cool edit pro completely without reinstalling?

I have huge problems with latency using 2.0, so when I overdub, I use 1.2, which is dead accurate and rock solid.

That's not latency, that's drift, have you gone to "options>settings>multi-track" and ticked the boxes for "correct for drift in recordings" and/or "correct for start sync in recordings"?

Read the help files concerning the open order/start order, with some audio cards this is important to get right.

Yeah, Strryder, thanks - I haven't had time to try it out and see if it works, but I'll give 'correct for drift in recordings' a go for sure ('correct for start sync didn't work for me when I tried it before').

If that doesn't work, it's my dinosaur soundcard.

still doesnt work!!!!

hi guys. i just found this site, and its awesome and everybody is really here to help!!!
i have a similar problem: VERY WEIRD

when i record tracks on cool edit pro SOMETIMES very often a track will become out of sync, just like above. i tested it out with the metronome. some tracks will be fine, then one track will be faster and is off a beat within 30 seconds. what is strange is this happens only sometimes. if i select another track, it sometimes works, or if i destroy the block and re record it sometimes works. but this problem is serious as i want to compose multitrack music on this thing and not knowing if a take is going to be good is very serious. i am seriously considering changing programs to cubase or something but since i started with cool edit and know how to use it a bit i would like to stick with it. i just got a new computer thats why its messed up. (i think)

anyways, if anybody can help that would be SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO awesome.

amd duron 1.3
40 gig hard drive
sound onboard c media ac97 audio device (there was and sis7012 on the install cd but i dont know anything about computers and couldnt do the driver thing)
the sound seems to work fine for playback. its just the recording that SOMETIMES screws up. i cant understand how a computer could do something SOMETIMES! the drift and sync boxes, i clicked and tried but to no avail. any ideas? if i get another program will i have the same problem? thanks in advance. merry christmas!

Cool Edit's a pretty reliable program, so if your computer doesn't like it, that has got probably more to do with the settings for the computer than the software.

Red face finally i got it guys!!

so i couldnt sleep i havent slept in two days because of christmas and this computer thing. but now its fixed. i thought it was the onboard sound being really crappy, so i went and talked to the guys that sold it to me and they had never heard of such a problem, i was mad they said they could sell me a hardware based card for 10 cad. i said sure ill try it out i got a asound express 2 soundcard, tried intalling it. i finally got the drivers and everything in and when i record, the noise is sooooo bad. the volume is low, i can barely hear anything. i look up all over the internet for similar problems, try adjusting this and that, nothing. so because its a new computer, i tried installing my os win 98se over the os. didnt work , lots of weird problems. i said, screw it, lets formatthe whole drive and reboot. i put the sound card in still same problem. so its 2 in the morning on christmas eve and i say, ok i nee d to get this done, so i try as a last resort installing the onboard again (so now it would be two devices i guess) there are lots of promts asking for my win98 cd for drivers that it cant locate. files like ksclock.ax and mspclock and dl16 or something anyways i had to search for these drivers on the net they were not on the cd. it works fine now. no noise (by my standards) and its in sync. so, i guess i just did a crappy job of installing drivers the first time. they were drivers for windows, not the sound devices i think. does that explain the time lag? maybe i dont know about computers but i feel like a learned something tonight. i am looking forward to reading these forums for advice on improving my home recordings.
ps the number of total threads and posts and members listed on the home page do not seem to correspond with the flow of traffic and actual number of posts/pages available to see. am i missing something because i am stupid?
thanks and good night!

ha ha i guess not.

so i thought it worked, and i tried today, and voila same thing. i guess because i was testing out the tracks too short, or something, anyways, its the same problem today. so, i think:

my onboard sound device (k7som motherboard?) is good for recording maybe one short track, but cant handle more or playing and recording at the same time. even if i change the input/output devices to wave mapper (is this different?) it doesnt work.

the ten dollar sound card i bot is worth ten dollars. the noise when recording is super loud. useless.

i should go and buy a soundcard tomorrow. somebody recommended a creative labs one that is about 50-60 cad with a midi input. so i guess i will try that.

i hope when installing this thing i dont mess it up and have to reformat again.

any comment on my comment about the total number of posts and members vs actual activity and readable posts?

yes, i often write like that, long run on run on. thanks for reading tho.

happy new year.

THIS MAY HELP YOU

For one thing, you may want to check for any patches released by Cool Edit. Second, WIN98se is horrible, that is a very unstable OS. I would also recommend the Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy series. You can also get one with what is called a "live drive" which uses a drive bay in the front of your computer and usualy has firewire ports, midi, spdif and rca format. The older ones even have 1/4" inputs and XLR balanced inputs. When you get that, look at your motherboard manual for the computer. Check and see if there are jumper settings on the motherboard itself to disable the on board sound card. If not, just goto start>settings>control panel>system. In the device manager list, you will see something like multi media. Find your soundcard and goto the properties menu. You can disable the device from there. Then you should have no conflicting devices when you install the Sound Blaster. As far as your latency issues go, check this same thread, there is some good "pain relievers" mentioned earlier. Also, everytime I get done recording track(s) I always right click and then set to "LOCK" the track in the time it is in. This is about as much as I can offer.. GOOD LUCK

Smile guess what?

i went and got a soundblaster live soundcard! and it works perfectly. it was my cheap onboard sound and cheap soundcard. while soundblaster is cheap, it totally suits my needs at the time and i am satisfied. thanks for all your help, i really learned a lot during this problem!
