please can someone assist with this enquiry:
i have a yamaha hardware sequencer with on board sounds and effects, a novation synth and a yamaha sampler. the Seq. sends MIDI out to the synth, the synth sends thru to the sampler just to keep it in time and the synth also sends back to the seq. so that i can record synth knob twiddles. But, i'd like to use a midi keyboard to play the onboard sounds in the sequencer and also to play the synth too and i don't know how i would connect it. would i need to get some kind of midi thru box???

yep, you would need a midi merger box. Plug the synth and the other keyboard into the inputs, and plug the output into the sequencer.
