Aloha is on a distinguished road
What would you say these are worth...

An Otari MX 70 that looks similar to this...
http://www.4sync.com/rc/picdisplay.asp?itemkey=278

An Otari MX 7800 that looks similar to this...
http://www.4sync.com/rc/picdisplay.asp?itemkey=263

They are both the 8 track versions.

Is $1000 each an alright deal?

The price is s steal IF the heads are good and the units are functioning. The heads alone will cost three times that if they are ground down to the end.

If the machines are in great shape, it's a steal!

If a lot of TLC is needed, factor the repair costs into the price.

When I bought my used 16 track years ago, the seller wanted 4500 bones for it and I talked him down to 3500 because I pointed out work that would be needed to get the machine up and running 100%. To date I have spent about 100 bucks on parts and about 550 on labor. After the new year, I will spend a few more to get a couple of mis-behaving channels to work reliably.

Factor service costs when you bid or buy any used gear and make sure you have a reliable service center to deal with and a good parts supplier.

Studio ATRs are like cars. They will need regular maintenance.

Cheers!
