Roland VS 840EX..compression help?

I'm trying to learn more about compression, specifically through the use of my Roland VS 840EX that I bought from a friend. For now, I'm just recording one guitar and vocals with very minimal effects. Can anyone suggest a setting I might use that will help me control the dynamics of my recordings? I'm just looking to make a basic recording of my music to give to my family for the holidays.
