the basics of recording hip-hop or rap

I write and play alternative or rock music... I'm used to recording this. How does one go about recording rap? Is the track mostly synthesized... or do some use live instruments? What techniques are used? For some reason this hip-hop type hook came into my head and I was interested in exploring it.

There isn't any 'right' way to record anything. A lot of Hip Hop is a combination of MIDI sequences, sampled loops, realtime playing of synths or even tracked real instruments... much like the hook popped in your head as you mentioned, approach the concept of the supporting track and production in the same manner. Sit with it... work with it... use your own influences and ideas... Do something new for christs sake!

Good luck
