Issues with playing and recording audio at the same time.
Hi:
I am trying to add backup vocals to lead vocals. I record the first audio track OK but when I create a new track for the backup vocals and hit record, it does record, but I can not hear the first audio track to sing along with it. I made sure there is not mute. If I select just PLAY, I can hear it, but never when I try to record wherein the sound card is playing and recording at the same time. Does this have something to do with my sound card not being full duplex or something? The source of the audio tracks is my Sound card so maybe it can not play and record audio at the same time? Would this work if I had a full duplex sound card? Maybe I have my audio track settings wrong, it only offers left or right ports on my sound card, I tried having one left and the other right, but still no go. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Tom |

Recording and playback only works with Full Duplex cards. If it's not, then it doesen't work.
What soundcard do you have?

Almost all sound cards these days are full duplex. Is your system really old??

My sound card is a SoundMAX Audio Card in my Sony VAIO PCV-RX 650 (1.6-GHz Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB hard drive)
I looked but could not find if it is full duplex or not. maybe one you know? |

I saw on the internet that soundmax is Full duplex
Specifically it says "Yes, SoundMAX is full-duplex. It supports input and output at the same time." http://forms.analog.com/Form_Pages/s...tml#question17 not sure if these means it can record and play at the same time, but looks like it should. |

I found the answer in Tools - Audio options
there is a box that says - "simultaneous playback\recording" I guess some sound cards need this. Works fine now. |

Yes it is strange - it wasn't checked by default.
My sound is handled by a SoundMax integrated chip so this may have thrown it off. It works OK now, but I probably will by a SB Audigy in a few months once I outgrow this one. Thanks for everyone's help! Tom |

Have a look at this article at KvR before you decide on SB what's so bad about creative soundcards?
