Garnet Mohawk amplifier: offers welcome (reserve price on it of $400 CDN/$310USD, which is what I paid for it, I will not sell it for a loss, it is way too good for that)

This is an extremely rare Garnet amp, signed by Gar Gillies, and sounds great. I only have so many dollars, and like all of you I am trying to get a studio up and running, so all of my capital is locked up in buying other gear, and I desparately need monitors! I also need mics/preamps etc. I just bought a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe that my wife was lovely enough to lend me money for, on the condition that I sell my other amps to pay her back ASAFP .

It is a 5-7W amp, so it doesn't get all that loud, but is phenomenal for recording. With a DI or preamp running into it, it can hold its own in a jam, and mic'd up it will be fine in a gig. It is dead simple in design (two knobs: master volume and tone, Footswitchable treble boost, extension cabinet capability), but complex in tone. I will kick myself later in life I am sure for selling this. In fact I am kicking myself now for putting it here, but the Fender Hot Rod I just bought is the tone I have been seeking for two years.

There was competitor of Garnet's out of Brandon, Manitoba by the name of Johnson Amps. Unfortunately Mr. Johnson passed away some time ago and Gar bought a lot of old Johnson stock from his widow. One of the items was the blank Mohawk chassis, painted and silk screened but
with no circuitry installed. Gar designed a circuit for it and built a few. A sweet little recording amp with a footswitchable second gain stage and a spectacular new old stock Celestion speaker from the fifties.

Those speakers have been verified by Celestion as being from the early 50's, predating most guitar amps. They were brand new in the box when installed in your Mohawk (sometime in 2000-2002). They're worth a good buck all by themselves as you can appreciate from the great tone.

But don't let me give you the idea that it's all in the speakers. That amp is a nice little class A, 5-7 watter and all Point to Point wiring. The second gain stage on the footswitch is trick too. It uses a solid state rectifier, a single 12AX7, and a 6L6 in the output. You can definitely plug it in to any larger cab (4 ohms is best, 8 ohms OK but will cut into the amps already meager power). Plugging a small amp like this into a large cabinet is an old recording trick.

Sadly, no I can't consider a trade. My wife (the accountant), demands that the books be balanced! I will have to wait until spring before I have the cash to get the monitors, and am considering Event PS6, Yorkville YSM1p or M-Audio BX8 at the moment... or whatever appears as a good deal at the time.

Just to be fair, offers can be made up to Wed. Dec 10, noon PST (1 week).

After that time, if I haven't received an offer meeting the reserve, I will be putting this to Ebay.

If I start getting offers, I will post them here so that everyone knows what the current offer is (I will leave the offers anonymous). Consider it a "soft reserve"... if we get close enough I will let you know.
