studio magnetics ar 2400

I recently hired a studio magnetics 2'' 24track - unfortunatly no manual and not calibrated ( especially the record head). Can anyone help please?

The ysync and repro heads seem to be working o.k. However, the record head does not. A signal leaving the console (Mackie SR 40 - 8) at 0VU arrives at the tape machine at around -20. All connections are fully balanced. How can I solve this problem? Any help out there?
