Question Compression Question

I just purchased a Behringer Composer Pro XL 2600 and tried it out last night with recording a couple guitar tracks. I double tracked each guitar using both an SM57 and a Beta 52. I set the ratio to 2:1 for both and the threshhold to -20db, an attack of 4 ms, and a release of 50 ms. I saw a gain reduction of about 10 db for the SM57.

Now my question relates to the Beta 52. I was unable to get any visible gain reduction on the Beta as displayed by the led display on the compressor. I even reduced the threshold to -40db to see if I could get a gain reduction. Still none.

My set up is as follows:

Mics direct into the compressor
Line out of the compressor to my mixer
Line out of the mixer to my Delta 1010 then to the HD (am using Logic Platinum)

Could this be because the Phantom Power is not getting through the compressor?

Should my set up be with the compressor between the mixer and the Delta 1010, going direct from the mics to the mixer?

The tone and signal of the guitar tracks was good but I really expected to see some gain reduction for both mics.

Thanks,

JBell

Fucking board. There are not too many people logged in!

You need to get the mic to line level before it goes to the compresser. Go to the mic pre on the mixer, then if you have an insert put the compresser in there. If not then it should go between the pre and the a/d.

Also, the Beta 52 doesn't need phantom power.

Thanks for the reply. I was mistaken in thinking the Beta 52 required Phantom Power. I will try placing the compressor between the mixer and the A/D.
