Question recording a demo

I am an aspiring rapper and want to record a demo tape to see if I really have what it takes. Basically I would like to know what is a cheap home recording setup for my computer. I have a pretty adequate computer and a SB Live soundcard. What else would I need, a decent mic and pre amp? software? anything else? thanks much for the help and when I do have the finished product I will post for all to hear.

For the best quality demo at the lowest price, try checking out a few of your local studios!

Good luck!

FromVa2Ga, welcome to our home here at HR.COM

I would suggest that you take a look at some of the past posts here at this site, in this forum and the Newbie Forum. The research will answer a few of your questions.

You should then let us know how much money you can/are willing to spend on equipment.

We will help you create the best setup for your budget.

well I have pretty limited funds, I would say 300 - 400 dollars at most...I was looking at buying a studio projects B-1 mic and a M-audio audio buddy pre amp. What else would i need? cables, software? do you think with that equipment i could get a demo worthy sound?

thanks and its a pleasure to be here at HR.com

Well I went ahead and bought myself a nice x-mas gift. Studio Projects B-1 mic, Studio Projects Vtb-1 pre amp, mic stand and shock mount, and some monster cables along with an 1/4 to 1/8 stereo cable to plug into my soundcard. Hopefully I'll be receiving it soon to see how it all works out, but my next move (after i save more money) is to upgrade from my SB Live card which i hear is supposedly so horrible. I hope to make a fine demo real soon!
