Smile M-30 201 (Intermediate mixing)

O.k. Reel Person ang Ghost.

I got the M-30 basically rockin and its pretty cool.
The pre-amps and gain structure continues to impress me with how quiet it is.
The EQ is REALLY sensitive, though, and can be really phasey on some sources....like cymbols.

Anyway I have my DELTA hooked to channels 1-4 and an RNC and Penta compressor hooked up to the send/recieve of the 4 busses (so I can try and learn the Michael Brauer buss compression thing).

So far I have been just been monitoring the busses directly (no submix) but for mixdoown applications....which out is considered the main stereo mix buss out.....is it the submix out or one of the two sets of phono outs????
I would guess the phono outs but then if I return the busses to channel 5-8 and wanted to mix in uncompressed tracks with the compressed buss tracks I would have to use the submix section wouldn't I.?????

Also.....where are the phono INS routed to????? And how do I monitor/control them??????

....and why is there NEVER enough cables????????????

I don't have an M30 in my possession and don't have a detailed picture of the back panel to see how the jacks are labeled.

If you have a digital camera, take a macro shot of the back and post it here and I can better answer your question.

Cheers!

Unfortunately I dont have a digital camera.

And my scanner is not hooked up.......but I can describe the layout on the back.

Each of the 8 channels has

ACCESS Send & Recieve
TAPE IN
LINE IN
DIRECT OUT (post eq...odd)
CUE OUT
(and of course the MIC In)

Then there is a center section with

PHONO IN 1 Left & Right
PHONO IN 2 Left & Right
PHONO OUT 1 L & R
PHONO OUT 2 L & R
(and the ground lug)

Then the Buss section has

(For each of the 4 busses)
ACCESS Send & Recieve
AUX OUT
CUE OUT

and then below that is a section with

SUBMIX IN L & R
SUBMIX OUT L & R
MONITOR OUT L & R
BUSS IN 1, 2, 3, & 4

and thats all of the ins and outs.

If this is helpful I could use a little boost.
I've tried hooking my CD player to each of the Phono ins and got nothing and get no output from the phono outs and a VERY weak signal from the submix outs.

Ok.

Thanks for the listing of all the jacks that helps me!

Let's see if I can help you now with some of your questions.
Quote:

The submix outs would be for summing and outputting the mix that is created from the green colored knobs on the right side of the board so that wouldn't be it.

I suspect the board's design expects you to re-use buss one and two as a stereo out and feed those output jacks to a two track recorder.

As an alternative, where you could get a summation of all four buss outs, the monitor out jacks might be your best bet of hearing and routing your double paralleled compressor patch that you are wanting to experiment with by feeding the monitor outs to an external two track recorder of your choice.

Yes, you would have to use the submix section so, as per my answer to your first question, this would not be suitable for what you want to do.
Quote:
Also.....where are the phono INS routed to????? And how do I monitor/control them??????
They are routed into the PHONO pre-amp which must in-turn be routed out through the PHONO out jacks via patch cord to the input channel strip that you wish to play your record player through. Remember, these jacks are for good old record players and this feature was included for disc-jockey usage or anyone who wished to bring the sound of an LP into their sound mix.
Quote:
....and why is there NEVER enough cables????????????
I have often asked myself that very same question!

These inputs are for remember vinyl LP record players and require the output to be externally patched to the desired channel strip, just like I described above.

I hope I got all that right and hopefully A Reel Person will be along shortly to either praise me or correct my mistakes!

Hope that helps a little.

Cheers!

Arrow There is no master stereo buss on the M30, for starters,...

but I believe the SUBMIX section is the nearest thing to a master stereo buss, functionally.

It's not the PHONO connectors, as these are strictly for interfacing actual turntables to the mixer.

GFM's doing a great job answering these posts, and saving me all that typing!

I looked at the "buss compression" scheme in Tape Op, and although I can't reverse engineer your session, I believe the hookup you're looking for is the SUBMIX.

Thanks again guys.

No dedicated stereo buss.....bummer.

Oh well like Brauer says in the article.....you gotta walk before you run.

So i'll have to scale it back....of course I'm only talking about 8track mixes so it already is scaled back quite a bit.

I hooked everything up to a patch bay now so its easy switching things around.

Any guesses as to why the Submix Out sends a very weak signal????

My best guess is because there is not as much gain-staging in this simple off tape monitoring system as there is where you have the channels strip's gain, augmented by the eq's gain, coupled with the buss master's gain feeding the stereo monitor's gain.

That's a score of 4 to 1 in my mixer books.

Cheers!

I have an m-30 manual. Let me know if you`d like to see anything in particular and I'll scan it for you.
