My first post

I did this beat the same day I got my new synth/workstation. My buddy decided to rap over it. Take it easy on me please. But, be honest. I didn't have a chance to eq the drum kit.

Cool You want a beat critique? or track?

Well I'll just give you my little thought's about the whole track.
I felt it was pretty tight man...The beat needs something else though, but as you said you just got your workstation so i'm sure you will put the final touches on it... To me the Mc is pretty nice...
he sound's kinda ol school ..but that's not a bad thing .. because any other route he would have takin on this beat wouldn't really work at all.. Just my thought's Peace

Thanks Kevlar!

I couldn't figure out how he could do his hooks different. I've just been trying to figure out my Motif 6 since the end of Oct. But, IMO, this Workstation is tight mannnnn. Soon I will try to work on doing some sampling with the built in sampler.

Thumbs up

Thats good. My suggestons would be to raise the verse vocals up a good bit and maybe pan off center just a little so it plays off of the strings. Other than that all I can think of is to maybe add another kick on top of the one you used to thicken it up since that is a very dominate feature of the song. Plus dropping the beat here and there might help shake things up a bit too.

Good stuff man.

I didn't listen to your track, but if you need help with your Motif, just holla...

check the motif forums, too.

Word, what Outlaws said. Plus I strongly urge you to keep at it with your Motif. Get in there and tweak the presets. You'll see you truly have a beast in your hands.

Peace

What do you mean about changing the presets? You mean as far as reverb and chorus. Could you give me some insight?

Not exactly. You can change the sound of the instruments themselves. Just play around with LFOs, envelopes and filters. You should have access to each voice's envelope, or ADSR, or something along those lines. Look in your manual for that, or real time controllers. Just pull up any sound, then twist knobs and sliders freely until you hear something you like. There are endless possibilities. Also try checking out the MIDI mania and Keyboard sections of this forum.

Peace

Thanks everyone for your comments. I think I'm kinda limited with the factory drums though. I trying to figure out where is the best place on the net to get some sample cds. Yo jskillz89, I use a MXL990 mic with a behringer ultra voice pro VX2000 and a mx802a mixer.

Hi_D_Ho_Man, thanks for the info. I will look into that sample link page. I think I bookmarked it about 4 months ago before I got my board. It's a lot of talent in this forum, and if it wasn't for sharing ideas, tricks and fundamentals a lot of new producers would be stuck (like myself). I will post some of my new tracks once I finish mixing them a little more. I will return the feedback also.

Very tight work. This is your first beat? If so, you got some serious natural ability. Either way, keep at it.

I don't hear a bassline. That and not having a hihat is what makes the beat sound like it's missing something. I think you could get away without a hihat, but bass (especially in the verses) is needed IMHO.

Also I would suggest using a different eq or technique on the hook vocals. Right now there is no difference between the hooks and verses vocally. Could do something as simple as doubling or different EQ. Just to differentiate between the two.

Overall, I'm really feeling this though. Keep it up.

Stray

i think its ok.

think you need a 2nd contrasting melody up top, and yes you do need a bassline.
I thought there was too much tail on that main organ or whatever your pads are.

i like that sort of orchestral/churchy feeling, the rapper is good, yes he needs to change an octave on the hook or somethin to diffrentiate..

i hope you send an update, the beat got potential, it just doesn't seem done.

Then again, my beats have too much stuff goin on, maybe you're right and I'm wrong...or maybe i'm too used to hearing these stupid unrelated sample sounds on everyones tracks. Keep your own flava, don't take too many opinions to your mixing board, you'll end up doing stuff you don't like, just to please everyone else.

when i 1st started i had this fresh style, then i let everyone hear and comment..i made change after change after change. A year later I go back, and that 1st mix sounded so clean and fresh, and was the sound "I" originally wanted. The last remix just sounded like everything else out there....
