Behringer Composer Pro-XL MDX2600?

Hi,

Anybody using this?

I bought one a couple of days ago and I cannot seem to get the peak limiter to play the game.

I am confused - is anybody using this and can someone give me a recipe for using this in a PC recording environment.

I am going instrument => pre-amp => compressor/limiter -- doesn't seem to matter what I select, if I don't use the compressor as a limiter, I cannot seem to get the peak limiter to catch peaks......... I red line irregardless.

I am going into an Aardvark Direct Pro 24/96 - using the LINE level input and turned down to -14dB.

Thanks,

Q.

Qwerty - I took a quick look in the manual (I don't have the equipment) and it mentions there are 2 limiters.

Level limiter 1 is a 'clipper' whose range is 0dB to OFF (+21dBu).

But I'm wondering if the levels and gain staging is looking good?
This piece of gear looks a little tricky - ther's no input gain adjustment so the thing you have upstream (the preamp), if it has a 'pro' level output of +4dBu then you'll want to set the MDX2600 to 'pro' level also. Once that's set you should be able to watch the Input meters to see if you're going over 0dB and adjust the preamp down if necessary.

So anyway - back to the clipper. I think if it's set to 0dB (full counterclockwise) then that's as low of a dB level you can get the clipper to limit - this is the limiter that would protect against any overshoots.

The other limiter is just a program dependent envelope follower or averaging limiter of some type. It should sound pretty smooth but you can overshoot this one pretty easy I think (try a snare hit to test it !).

But if all that is set right and you switch to output meters on the MDX2600 and adjust the output gain down you should see the meters in your recording software or mixer (I'm guessing here what is red-lining ?) drop accordingly below the red-line.

Just a thought anyway...
