advice needed

hi all.
i’m wondering if i could get some advice on a few things.
i have used cool edit pro 1.2a for about a year and really liked it so i upgraded to adobe audition
along with a new computer. i’ve never needed to multitrack before now and i don’t know how to go about doing it. i need to be able to use four mics on live drums and record them onto four seperate tracks at the same time on adobe audition. so i can do all the fun stuff like placement and volume ect..

right now i’m useing a pretty cruddy peavey unity 8 mixer and i wouldn’t mind going digital if that’s the only way i can be able to multitrack with adobe audition. i’ve already made up my mind to get a new mixer but i guess my question is, is a digital mixer the only way audition will let me multitrack like i want?

i have been reading up on some digital mixers and honestly i feel overwhelmed and out of my league by them. it seems they all need there own seperate sound card installed and some of them might not work with my operating system or adobe audition. i really need something that’s user friendly, very friendly.

as it looks right now, if i wanted to multitrack like i want i’d have to first record the drums on my old analog four track, then record each track one by one onto audition from the four track. i’ve tried it before with mostly poor results and
it always takes the fun out of recording music when i have to try to sync them back up on cool edit.

so anyway, any advice on mixers and how to go about multitracking with audition?

It's not the mixer you have to concern yourself about to record multitrack in Adobe Audition, it's the soundcard. (In fact, you can record and mix in Audition without a mixer coming into the picture at all.) The thing that determines how many tracks you can record simultaneously is your soundcard. Some soundcards have two ins, some have four, some have eight, some have ten or more. Not only that, a lot of the new cards have a built-in mixer and preamps as part of the package, so you don't need to buy an external mixer at all. So - what soundcard are you using, and how many channels does it have?

the soundcard i'll be useing is a sound blaster audigy 2 platinum.
i had thought about what you said before but for some reason i had the impression that if one input was being used then the others would be overrode.

my next question then would be, how do i get audition to recognize or assign each input to a certain track?
