new user with an ADAT connection question

I just bought an adat and I am trying to decide on a mixer. My question is: Can you use the insert jacks on a mixer (individual channels) to connect into the ins and outs of the adat? If I am not recording on the track would it play back through the mixer via the insert cable? Could I eq the signal coming back through? Or is my thinking all screwed up. I have an 8 channel insert snake. I dont want to spend the money for an 8 buss mixer.
