Can't record from MIDI

I like N-Track studio and the flexibility it offers, but before I consider registering it, I'd like to make sure I know how to properly use it ...

Thus far, every time I've imported a midi file and tried to transfer that file into audio (the record mixer is set to midi), after I hit the record button I get a message: "couldn't open file" ... what gives?
