need help selecting a power conditioner

ok, i have some pretty good gear now and i need to protect it from the evils of surges and power outtages and future east coast blackouts but i dont know much about surge protection. all i can tell you is i have all of my gear plugged into your typical power strips you can get at the local hardware and i do have a juice goose model 8.0(is this sufficent?)but it seems that it really is just a rack mount version of a power strip with no surge protection. In my neighborhood the power goes out a few times a year and sometimes it lights up lightbulbs in the house at what looks like 1/2 or 1/4 power and that cant be good for gear.
this is what i had in mind. tell me if im on the right track with this.

also is it ok to run a power strip or 2 off of these type of units?
