Question ?Reputable Mail Order Business?

How would you confirm the legitimacy of a business before you mail order from them?

The one in question is in Alabama, and so far I've not found anyone who has heard of them (so far)

!?HELP?!

Talking

Yo Lower level Dweller:]

You can write/call the Better Business Bureau in the "given" state in your post.

Do they offer a published catalog? If so, call your credit card company and ask if they are registered/valid business using credit cards.

Or call the company and ask for a bank reference. Then, call the bank to verify.

I checked out their website and I am always leary of any outfit that doesn't have a real address in a real place conspicuously displayed linked to their home page. The specials they are running seem to be on trash gear. And I haven't found much other gear offered at their site.
The only electric guitars they offer are Schecter/Silvertone/Johnson/B.C. Rich/Slammer?/Fernandes

All off brands last time I checked out NAMM.

Mixers: Crate/Kustom/Yorkville

I've heard good things about Yorkville Monitors but nothing about their mixers.

Their best mic seems to be the AKG C3000B; not a good sign!

Yea, the Yorkvilles YSM1P's are about the cheapest I've found anywhere.

I called my credit card company, they said they couldn't give me any info concerning that!

Gear1music's office doens't open for another half hour, so I will try to do the bank reference then. I guess what I am wanting to confirm is that they ARE a legitimate business i.e. making deposits/withdrawls etc?

hey cellardweller-

I saw this site too when i was shopping for York YSMp1 's

I had to have only those monitors, nothing else. I was worried about them too, not for business concerns but because of shipping and damage etc. So I called Yorkville and talked to them to verify the dealer list on their site was still up to date. Then drove about 90 min. out of town to buy them in person from the dealer. In my case it was a sound company and not a music store. The price was only about $30 more than the Gear1Music site. If you search you may be able to find my own post/question on this, maybe there was some feedback on the company from others here. (around March-April 2003)
I'm sorry but I think you should try to find a dealer on-land and personally drive wherever you have to to pick them up.

Alan

Damn, too late. I contacted Gear1music, obtainted their bank phone number, and the number for their local Better business bureau, and called both of them.

Turns out they have been in business since 2000, and have had one complaint which was resolved, related to advertising.

I went ahead and sent my cashiers check. I also included a note stating that I had been looking at Schecter guitars, which they deal in, and to send a catalog. Hopefully this will induce good service in that they won't want to screw up a potential follow-up sale.

If not I will spew their name and run them down every chance I get!!!

I'll let you know how it turns out...

oops. Thats OK because I don't think my fatherly rambling about picking them up yourself was all that relevant. Good tactic on asking for more info on Shcecter and the whole follow-up relationship thing

I think in the future, if you have doubts, it would be best to use a credit card for payment, since most credit cards offer some sort of fraud protection.

I kinda figured that a cashiers check may be second best to that...

I don't like credit cards. Have only had one in my life, which I intentionally keep at a $350 max.

I've always lived by "if you don't have the cash, you don't need to buy it".

I live and learn.

FedEx's site says it's due for delivery tomorrow. Barring disaster, I have to rate Gear1music very highly. If I receive them tomorrow, this will be the quickest delivery I've ever seen!

I've got wood

Apologies for diluting this forum, this is the final post on this thread for me.

Gear1music and Fedex kick ass.
