Getting Rid of Hiss etc...
I am a newbie at PC recording.
I am running the following... Behringer B1/Audio Tech dynamic ---> Audio Buddy ---> Tascam 424 4 track ---> Sound Blaster Live / PC ---> Cool Edit Pro 2 I am however hearing a fair bit of hiss... and this hiss is coming from even just the behringer b1/audio buddy/tascam stand alone. so.. I am wondering... while I can continue to screw with decreasing the hiss physically (any suggestions are welcome) what about the option of decreasing eliminating stuff like that via programs and all inside programs? what programs? how etc? any info would be appreciated!

Noise Reduction on existing noise is your last resort.
You want to find the source of the hiss and get rid of it. Fusion's idea will help you troubleshoot the source. I suspect you are not effectively maximizing gain stages. You need to ensure you have the hottest un-distoring signal at each link in your audio chain. Hiss is generally a constant. Therefore, you want to bring the signal you're recording up as high as you can without distorting it. That will lower the effective volume of the hiss. Screw the meters. Use your ears.

Follow Todzilla's advice, but after that I suspect the Tascam is the source of the hiss. It's the only thing in the chain that wasn't specifically designed for recording digital audio, and my experience with 4 track tape recorders is that they generally have a lot of hiss. YMMV.
Why do you have it in the chain anyway? My Tascam Porta 3 was very hissy.

My advice is no way was to live with hiss. My advice is to minimize it from ever happening in the first place. There is no after-the-fact hiss reduction that doesn't adversely impact your high-end. You minimize the hiss through sound and proven recording techniques, then if need be, you apply judicious hiss reduction. Here's a happy little "Shut the fuck up" for Fusion2.
Your first impulse is to say noise reduction? Please. What's the rule people? Do you look forward or backward in a chain when you need to problem-solve? Todzilla and maestro_dmc got it. pretzston, leave out the Tascam, and run the pre into the soundcard. If you still have hiss, check your gain staging and cabling, and let us know what you find. MP -what's the deal with the idiots this week? Is harmony central down for maintenance?

hey guys
I'll tell you. I really do appreciate everyones help and thoughts in all the posts I have started to make on Homerecording.com
But i must say, the way people turn on each other. Isn't thi supposed to be an online community of sorts? Fighting or lashing at each other kinda takes away from this being such a fantastic resource. I am new, and that is just my opinion. It makes for wasted unproductive reading. (not that I don't apprecaite your comments relative to the topic) But, I will be going through the chain tomorrow and seeing if I can identify the hiss. I have been using the tascam to use as a mix cause I have been dual micing the guitar... so I run it through with the mixer... also I like the hands on EQ... but I will backtrack through to find it. I'll let you know what i find! THX!

Sorry if you took my reply the wrong way. My point was simply to encourage folks to avoid hiss in the first place rather than try to eliminate it after the fact. No flames intended. I'm just an old fart who has learned the hard way to eliminate problems up front rather than try to deal with them later. Peace, -'zilla
