Getting Rid of Hiss etc...

I am a newbie at PC recording.

I am running the following...

Behringer B1/Audio Tech dynamic ---> Audio Buddy ---> Tascam 424 4 track ---> Sound Blaster Live / PC ---> Cool Edit Pro 2

I am however hearing a fair bit of hiss... and this hiss is coming from even just the behringer b1/audio buddy/tascam stand alone.

so.. I am wondering... while I can continue to screw with decreasing the hiss physically (any suggestions are welcome) what about the option of decreasing eliminating stuff like that via programs and all inside programs?

what programs? how etc? any info would be appreciated!

Noise Reduction on existing noise is your last resort.

You want to find the source of the hiss and get rid of it. Fusion's idea will help you troubleshoot the source.

I suspect you are not effectively maximizing gain stages. You need to ensure you have the hottest un-distoring signal at each link in your audio chain. Hiss is generally a constant. Therefore, you want to bring the signal you're recording up as high as you can without distorting it. That will lower the effective volume of the hiss.

Screw the meters. Use your ears.

Follow Todzilla's advice, but after that I suspect the Tascam is the source of the hiss. It's the only thing in the chain that wasn't specifically designed for recording digital audio, and my experience with 4 track tape recorders is that they generally have a lot of hiss. YMMV.

Why do you have it in the chain anyway?

My Tascam Porta 3 was very hissy.

Fusion2,

My advice is no way was to live with hiss. My advice is to minimize it from ever happening in the first place. There is no after-the-fact hiss reduction that doesn't adversely impact your high-end.

You minimize the hiss through sound and proven recording techniques, then if need be, you apply judicious hiss reduction.

Here are some basic Recording 101 pointers that may help you: http://www.stonecoldsoul.com/sernare...g/recgain.html

That is real tech, as in technique

Here's a happy little "Shut the fuck up" for Fusion2.

Your first impulse is to say noise reduction? Please.

What's the rule people? Do you look forward or backward in a chain when you need to problem-solve?

Todzilla and maestro_dmc got it.

pretzston, leave out the Tascam, and run the pre into the soundcard.

If you still have hiss, check your gain staging and cabling, and let us know what you find.

hey guys

I'll tell you. I really do appreciate everyones help and thoughts in all the posts I have started to make on Homerecording.com

But i must say, the way people turn on each other. Isn't thi supposed to be an online community of sorts? Fighting or lashing at each other kinda takes away from this being such a fantastic resource.

I am new, and that is just my opinion. It makes for wasted unproductive reading. (not that I don't apprecaite your comments relative to the topic)

But, I will be going through the chain tomorrow and seeing if I can identify the hiss.

I have been using the tascam to use as a mix cause I have been dual micing the guitar... so I run it through with the mixer... also I like the hands on EQ... but I will backtrack through to find it.

I'll let you know what i find!

THX!

Fusion2,

Sorry if you took my reply the wrong way. My point was simply to encourage folks to avoid hiss in the first place rather than try to eliminate it after the fact.

No flames intended. I'm just an old fart who has learned the hard way to eliminate problems up front rather than try to deal with them later.

Peace,

-'zilla

no prob, i just anwsered his questions and offered a route to start from finding his hiss issue, which you did as well as maestro_dmc did in his own unetiquette way, it looks like he's took offence and enlisted a few locial trols to rebute me... AOL twits no doubt...

your right, i was vague posting to a newb as such but in the end if he can't manage to clean his track successfully he'll need some sort of reduction... true? or live with it?

the rest of you wank witspews, get a life, passed 14 years old...

woo woo i can use 4 letter words, my my, how tech...

Yo pretzston:

As the creator of that (duplicate) thread you can do us all a favor and simply delete all that childish noise. You got some straight-up answers in *this* thread and cross-posting, even in the same forum is not good form.

don't confuse debate with trolling, which happens unfortunately...

just make a list and deal with it, them... ahem...

use the search feature top right of page to desern the trols from the general users...

Fusion2, respect given is respect earned.

You gave an opinion. Todzilla and maestro_dmc gave their own, and they did not attack you.

But you couldn't respect that, so you took two posts to attack maestro_dmc. And then Todzilla. Then the fun began.

So you flamed two members who gave good advice, not to mention the fact that you first gave bad advice, and that your posts are fragmented and misspelled.

I think you earned a hearty "Dipshit", don't you?

Todzilla's actually been very nice to you, despite the fact that you called him a "ledgen" in his own mind, and a "trolsh". Don't you know that Tod's very sensitive about his mental ledgendry and his trolsh tendencies?

So, you want some respect? Apologize to maestro_dmc and I'll cheerfully withdraw the "Dipshit".

What exactly about that post was so terrible? I said he should follow Tods advice, which included following yours, as far as checking with headphones.

The only reason I posted to this thread was because of my experience with a very noisy Tascam Porta3. It seems to be very obvious to me where the noise is coming into the chain.

BTW, until now, that was my only post on this thread to your eight, so why all the hatin'?

I don't need an apology either, so don't worry, I'm not holding my breath!

Sorry, but you wrote four (very, very stupid) posts before I called you on them. Read them over.

Nevertheless, I do apologize.

I'm sorry you don't know that noise reduction sucks.

I'm sorry you don't know to shut up and learn something when someone corrects misinformation.

I'm sorry that you get stupid when you're defensive.

all in fun,

p.s. So, who's toes did maestro step on, that you had to call him a dick for?
