Problems out the...

Alright guys... here it is... I have a Behringer B1, a Tascam 424, an Audio Buddy, and a PC.

I have my mics (behringer b1, audio tech midnight blues dynamic) running into my audio buddy (for both preamp and phantom) and out into the inputs of my tascam 424 4 track.

not, I want to record to my PC... so... I am running out of the 4 track into the "line in" on my Soundblaster Live Value card...

here is where the problem comes in.

now while I have all that running.. I can speak into my mic and it comes out through my pc speakers clear and fine... the problems come in when I do the following...

I turn the speakers off obviously and as soon as I press the "R" and hit record on Cool Edit Pro 2 the signal from the mic drops off and I need to get much louder for ANY signal to come through and it is muted, distorted and horrible.

as soon as I unclick record and speak into the mic and turn my speakers back on the sound comes back through the speakers perfect.

So...

The sound comes through the mic --> audio buddy --> 4track --> soundcard/PC fine and out through my speakers fine.

AS SOON as I hit record on the cool edit pro 2, the sound drops off and the signal is weak and distorted till I unclick record.

Must be a setting right? Shouldn't Cool Edit Pro 2 pick up the same sound as what comes through my speakers?

Any help would be apprecaited. I hit the grey "rec" button and played around between some settings making sure it was all on Sound Blaster wav device... but doesn't seem to change anything.

That's wild.....

My guess is the SBLive! mixer and CoolEdit aren't cooperating properly.


A second guess is a driver problem, or worse, and IRQ issue.

but you would think it couldn't be the drivers cause windows is fine with them... cool edit sounds crappy.

whether your speakers are on, off, great, crappy, or not even plugged in should have absolutely nothing to do with how CEP is recording. But of course, if your speakers are OFF, well, you're damn sure gonna' hear a drop off in the sound level, lol. I mean, tell me you're monitoring with headphones or something.

There has to be more to this fascinating story.

Oh, do this...double click on the input level meters at the bottom of the screen before you arm the tracks or hit record or turn off your speakers or anything. Talk into the mic, and you should see those meters move...check to see where the signal is pushing the meters up to. Then, mute the speakers, arm the track, and hit record and record the same thing you were testing, and see if the input meters are showing about the same levels as they did when you were just testing.

Disclaimer: I'm a bit new to the recording aspect of computers....


Perhaps you could try to record the incoming signal with the Windows Sound Recorder or some utility. If the signal is still messed up, you know at least that the problem is not a bad setting in Cool Edit. This doesn't give you an answer, but could help isolate the problem.

well.. I ran it through the mic input instead of the line in and I got sonud. trest it some more now

why wouldnt it work with line in?

With your soundcard, yes. My guess is that you don't have it set to record from the line in input.

Double click on the speaker icon on the lower right of your screen (if you're using windows), and a window should pop up.

Go to "Options" tab, and select "Properties," then check the "recording" option...make sure that "line in" has a check mark next to it. That should fix it, but I'm still at a loss as to what this has to do with your speakers, lol.

i reckon that you may be running your speakers from your systems intergrated soundcard and not your soundblaster card.You should simply make sure you select soundblaster as your input source for recording.its in the menu after you click r on the track.i think this works.i could be wrong as im new to this stuff.
