normalizing:when to do it.

first of all can someone explain in simple terms what the normalizing process in mastering is? i would think it is the process of finding your peak points and low points and bringing them to a "normal" level, but mabye i am way off.

second, when should this be done? before eq and comprssion or after?

Check out the thread in this forum on normalizing on the second page of this forum. It's dropped off the radar, but was just recently discussed in good detail.

I believe there was another thread very similar to it in the recording techniques forum, as well.

....aww man, that was bad.....

I followed a couple of those threads, and even though some folks argued until the cows came home, the answer of when to normalize is NEVER. Speaking from countless hours of personal experience (not simply regurgitating what I've read), permanently remove normalizing from your toolbox - trust me.

When you master, use a limiter or multi-band compressor and your ears to balance levels.
