Where did my volume envelopes go?

I would be so appreciative if someone could help me out with this . . .

Why is it that all of a sudden, I can't seem to use any of the volume envelopes in Cool Edit. Obviously, past sessions that I've used them on are showing up just fine, but any time I start a new recording session, I can't seem to apply any envelopes to the tracks, and it's driving me nuts!
