Question I have questions

I was in some of the other forums and was reading and now I realize that I am very confused with the terms that I heard. I have no idea what yous are talking about. So here are my questions:

1. What is the "stero field"?

2. What is in "in line monitoring"?

Also when and how should I use these.

I have a Mackie 32.8 and an Alesis Adat and some other stuff that was given to me by my grandfather. I don't know how to use this equipment. I have just been playing and turning the knobs and reading the manuals that came with all the stuff. I have to say (and really feel stupid saying so) that I really have no idea what I am reading. I can understand maybe 25% of what I am reading. Some one here suggested that I get the book Home Rcording For Dummies so I did. Haven't received it yet.

Please help me!!! I really need everything in lamens terms.

1. Probably it's 'stereo field'. Stereo send sound to both channels, L and R, while mono sends sound to a single channel (usually L).

2. This is monitoring/hearing what you're playing. You'll need a pair of monitors to do that. You can use also headphones if you can't afford the monitors, but the sound quality is not the same.

You can check the glossary in this site to look for some terms.

...sounds like you have some very nice equipment to make use of. Most of us came through the ranks with crappy cassette based 4 track recorders which have a much lower learning curve ...yes, I'm jealous

Do some reading. You can find a wealth of info on this very site (not just the BBS, here.

It's very well written, and you don't need to be a rocket scientist to understand it. Grab a reem of paper, a new inkjet cartridge and a cup of coffee and spend some time with the basics. It's a lot of work, but well worth it.
