Fill up the mix

hi there

I have this new song that's almost finished now. It's a bit of a country-song - drums, bass, ac-guitar, e-guitar, vocals. I only have the lead vocals so far and I don't want to add to much of a choir, probably just the "aah, the guitar-player sings along" 2nd voice ;-).
now the problem is: the mix sounds a bit "empty". what shall I fill the emptiness with? some more guitars or just some great mixing-skills and EQ?

It's hard to say without hearing it. Is the mix wimpy or is the arrangement just lacking? There is nothing wrong with having some space in the arrangement. Most people try to put in too much.

My guess is that if it sounds lacking it is a mix issue and you just don't have enough energy in the mix.

try compressing the 2 bus...that usually does the trick

try any basic background keyboard chords? no notes just hold the chords.

you can control the freq from crowding pretty easily by using the low or high notes, keeping it away form the singer freq's for example...filler.

maybe bass line is not filling?

I just doubled the acoustic guitar. spread them wide and here we go. sounds a lot better. I also found out that having the acoustic guitar as "main-instrument" leaving quite a bit low-end in the track sounds much better.
