Angry drum mic setup

recording a band in my project studio tomorrow, and i have just picked up some new mics...
lemme run this mic'ing set up by you

kick drum - beta 52
snare - sm57
rack - sm57
floor tom - shure pg 52 (beta's little buddy)

now i've heard said that overheads in the whole x-y configuration, trying to pick up a stereo sound of the room would be bad, if they werent a matched pair...

well i have two oktava mc012's and an audio technica 3035...

should i just use the 3035 in the middle?

or perhaps do that? and close mic the hi-hats and the ride with the oktava's...

YOU TELL ME!
or ill getcha

And your Mc012s aren't matched?

It doesn't matter if they're matched or not. I'd put the Octavas in X-Y about two drum stick lengths above the snare and the 3035 out about 3' in front of the kit about the height of the top of the kick shell.

Hmm. That should work nicely

So, when did the shift from: "The mics must be matched as closely as possible" to: "It's not really that important" take place?

And shouldn't the XY pair be pointing at the centre of the Kick too?

If they're not matched, it ain't a deal breaker. Unless one of the mics is damaged or something, they sould be close enough for rock & roll. It's just a bit easier to deal with if the mics are close in their responses.

well my cable modem died and i didnt get the reponses to this thread in time...

i ended up using the 3035 in the middle...
but at about chest height...
all the cymbals came thru very clearly and nicely...
but the toms had just a thwap to them (very quiet) and some minor snare, which made the 57 on the snare sound nice
