The Absolute Ultimate DIY Diffusor

I've been putting my new room together. I have most of the room done, but there is one section where I have a blank wall exactly parallel to a heavy flat door. I intend on putting 1" of 703 on the door, but haven't done it yet. I was able to hear an echo off the surfaces if I clapped my hands.

I built the worlds absolute ultimate DIY diffusor on the wall. Even before putting anything on the door, the sound improvement was amazing - absolutely no echo when I clap my hands.

The diffusor is 4 feet wide, 12 inches deep, and about 7.5 feet high. It took me about half an hour to build. I got all the parts at the local Home Depot store.

The "diffusor" consists of the hang on the wall, open wire shelving. (similar to the Elfa easy hang system at www.elfa.com) The shelves are wire and open. You screw in one bar across the top of the wall, hang a couple of support bars down the wall and attach the shelves. You can use solid shelves if you want -- I prefer the wire shelves to let the sound get all over the place and get truly mangled.

For proper diffusion, fill the shelves with microphones, boxes, cables, books and other miscelaneous studio "stuff".

Works great!!

Lee, you might wanna do a slow audio sweep from 20-20k at about 90 dB to check for rattles/buzzes on that - hand claps don't always show up all the problems... Steve

As usual, Steve - great point. The rack seems pretty sturdy, but I'll do the sweep as soon as I can (my audio gear is just now getting set up after the construction). If there are any buzzes, I expect a piece of rubber or two will take them right out.

OK, OK -- here's a teaser pic of the ultimate diffusor. I'm putting together an update for John's studios under construction site now.

Sooo, does that make you a "pic tease"..? (sounds of fiendish laugh echoing through the halls, causing wire shelf to buzz un-controllably...)

Not too much of a "pic tease" -- because John rocks. I sent him an update to the studio last night and its already up on his studios under construction site.

The slats look better in the pictures than in person I've got to add some finish trim to cover up a few rough edges -- no big deal.

In general, I'm really liking the sound. Looking at the studio and the pics, I realize I could be seen as the poster boy for angled slot resonators and 703 wrapped in muslin!
