mr8 - what can i expect?

hi, i'm in the market for an mr8 and i was wondering if someone can tell me if this will do a good job for me. i am planning using it to work on one or two songs at a time. i do everything on the computer and i would import the song onto the fostex - maybe convert that mix into the low quality mode if that's possible. regardless, i would be using 2 or 3 tracks before i would go to the computer to dump. so i don't think i need all 8 tracks, maybe 5? and since you can't send mono files via usb, would it be a good deal to get a smart media card reader instead of a larger card? what's the difference between a smart media transfer and a usb one on the mr8?

i would be running all my mics into a behringer 602a before it enters the mr8 - like four drum mics -->behringer--> fostex stereo mix.

can you import wave files onto the mr8 so that the performer can jam along to a song made on the computer... would this task need a smart media writer, or can it be done on the usb transfer.

thanks!

depending on where you are going to store your two songs at a time, it would work well. If you want to keep 2-3 songs on the CF card at a time, you will need a minimum of the 256mb card, but even it may not serve this purpose if the songs are much over 3 min. a piece.

256 so far has served me well, I can keep the two songs I am most currently working on, and if need be, import anything else as I need it from the PC to the MR8 via Fostex's .wav manager which is a free download on their website.

BTW, it comes with a 128mb card.

thanks for the responses. i'm just not sure about something: if i import a stereo file onto the mr8(song mix), and then i have a drummer record onto a stereo track of the mr8, let's say we want to keep a take but also redo it, do i have delete the song mix because there are only two pairs of stereo allowed on this?

If you put the stereo mix on track 7/8, you can still use 1/2, 3/4, and 5/6 as stereo pairs. The difference being that 1,2,3, and 4 can be mixed individually on the MR-8, where 5/6 is controlled with a single fader (no pan or reverb). No difference if you are going to bring the tracks back to a PC for mixing.

okay, that's not bad at all! and in an upcoming update you will be able to import mono files onto the machine. i guess i'll try the machine out with the 128 it comes with, and then decide if i need 256 or 512 after i learn how to use it

thanks!

here's a better question... what is it like when you want to transfer a track onto the pc, and making sure it is in sync with the song? does the fostex aid in this process without having to use midi or spdif sync technologies? thanks
