Red face Rap guy does his first acoustic rock mix...

My first acoustic rock mix w/vocals and I don't think I did so hot. Compression and EQ techniques I've used for the past 8 years didn't apply and talk about pressure. Luckily, the clients were young and thought that it was awesome. Anyways, I'm looking for any hints and tips that you guys can shoot my way as they are looking to return and bring more business my way. Compression on vocals was killing me as I had to place two SSL E-Channels on them to keep them tame. I tried allowing for a longer release time to keep them in check, but as a single channel, they couldn't keep up. Any help would be greatful. Thanks guys!!

You were compressing the original signal to-track as it was recorded?

It sounded OK. But the client needs a lot more help from you in the music department...like .......and show him what notes to play on the bass!! It's time for you to wear a producer's hat...if you want you clients to return, I think.

I'm kinda new at it...but I wouldn't start processing until I had a complete set of tracks...and a full mix.

No outboard compression was done. They recorded the tracks and I used my SSL set for comp/EQ. Yeah, bass was kinda off, but that's because they had no bass guitar. They recorded his acoustic/elec and I dropped octaves. I don't own a bass, but maybe I should get one if this is gonna be a repeat occurrance.
