First time Mac set up... (Suggestions)

I'm a PC guy and I'm helping a friend build a small home studio around his MacBook.

He is looking for something to track out his Motif, program some drums, and record vocals.

His budget is around $700 (Daw, interface, pre/mic combo etc...)

I recommended the Apogee Duet as an interface based on reviews.

What are some set-ups you would recommend?

I normally avoid package deals, but he is looking at the following, which doesn't seem too shabby:

Any input is appreciated...

*shrugs*

When you total up the mics, the interface, and Logic Express, you're more than the cost of the package, so I suppose the fact that the speakers are way too small to be usable and the mic stands are way too flimsy for all but the lightest mics isn't really a big deal, assuming you want those particular mics. The 2020/2021 are certainly usable, but a lot of it depends on what your friend plans to record.

I'd probably buy the package, sell the speakers and stands as a package on eBay, then use the money to help cover the cost of a pair of BX8a speakers and a couple of Tama MS205 mic stands.

Well, you have two good choices: Logic and Digital Performer. Then, you have the usable-but-feature-limited GarageBand. Finally, you have Cubase (ugh) and Pro Tools (but only with Digi interface hardware). I'd probably go with one of the first two unless your friend thinks he can get by with GarageBand (which comes free with the machine).
