    What happens when you master?

Well my only concern is my computer kind of sucks and my drive is old, so i was thinking errors could possibly occur during the ripping process... AMAZING that your mother was a nurse for Monk! That guy was one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time, I have a poster of him on my wall!!!

    Is Mastering necessary?

If you were just doing one instrument, like solo piano, or solo acoustic guitar, or a solo digital piano, would mastering be necessary?

    What happens when you master?

I see no reason why the mastering studio couldnt give me both the raw wav data files and a red book CD... doesnt seem a lot to ask! Data discs are very cheap, less then a few dollars... This would save me any possible logistical problems associated with ripping files with various freeware...

Pro Tools, Wavs, and Audio CDs,...

Could you rip the WAV files off of any CD that is sold in stores today? Usually when I would do this with Audio Grabber or other utilities, I would get popping noises and all sorts of glitches, and I very early on concluded that it was very hard to duplicate a CD perfectly... I still don't see...

    What happens when you master?

I might want to put some of these up on myspace or a website, as well as distribute them as a CD to different venues... so I would ideally like both formats! I guess as you suggested in another forum, I could rip them off the Audio CD without loss of sound quality.. What utility do you suggest...

    What happens when you master?

Thanks gecko.. you've always been cool about answering my questions, appreciate it! One followup: Is there any advantage or disadvantage to the 2 formats you mentioned? If you use the mastered wav files to burn it at home, will your resulting audio CD be as good as if you sent a redbook...

    What happens when you master?

Please forgive me for the stupidity of the question, but im new to this.. Lets say you have the wav files from a home recording session, and you give them to a professional studio to master... Will they simply take your original wav files, tweek them and edit them with software, and then...

Pro Tools, Wavs, and Audio CDs,...

So if you used Pro Tools to record a session, how could it already be in wav format? That doesn't make sense, .. until you save it or converted to another file format, it is still a Pro Tools file, isnt it? Also, how could a utility rip an audio CD with the same quality as the original audio...

I am a newbie, have some basic questions: If you have a pro tools file, will you lose sound quality by converting that to a WAV files? If you have an Audio CD that was created using WAV files, will you lose sound quality by extracting the files out of it?

    Desktop vs Laptop

Just curious, would a USB audio interface perform differently when plugged into a laptop instead of a desktop? I may need to record a digital piano that is in a different location, but if I'm gonna lose sound quality or get more noise going through a laptop, then I wont bother... Would...

    Please help me, Im confused!!

Yeah, Im talking about individual tracks.. I am trying to avoid normalizing, because I hear that amplifies noise levels.. So instead I decided to record each track at a good db peak level, and just not normalize the whole mix at all.. So what would be the ideal peak level? Right now the...

    Please help me, Im confused!!

Thanks dude, if this album makes any money I should probably pay you!!! I really appreciate the help, this board has been dead for the past week, not sure why... I seem to be hitting my peak at -2 db, which is below zero and hopefully acceptable.. I'm not getting any clipping so I think this...

    Please help me, Im confused!!

When they talk about "setting recording levels", is this something that you do with software, or are they talking about how loud you have your keyboard and input gains turned up before you start playing? I have the dial of my Tascam turned up to 6, and the Yamaha keyboard is turned up to 5...

I'm recording my digital piano album now with the Tascam 144, getting very clean sound and im impressed.. thanks for recommending that I get the Tascam, that was great advice! A few questions about recording my album: 1. What is the best decibel peak level to shoot for when recording a track...
