    Difference between drum heads...

Well, "thud" and "snap" are two very different terms, but I think you're talking about the attack of the toms. I agree with Mike H; for heavy music I'd tend to suggest a 2-ply head like a Remo Emperor or Evans G2 (clear, not coated) on top and a single-ply clear (Remo Amb or Evans G1) on the...

Running previously recorded tracks through "better" preamps?

LOL! That's funny...You haven't met my gal though. She's awesome. She's a vocalist with a small but mighty studio in her basement. She does a lot of vocal tracking down there and knows her stuff very well. Nope, actually I was talking originally about tracking through "worse" gear, then...

Running previously recorded tracks through "better" preamps?

Thanks Sonic! I appreciate the advice. As far as the "color=degrading" thing, I think you misinterpreted what I meant there, and for good reason; I should have written it differently. I meant it more as in the signal being processed by a cheaper, poorer-quality preamp, i.e. colored in perhaps...

Running previously recorded tracks through "better" preamps?

Thanks, guys, for all your responses. I suspected as much to be the case. I'll just have to try it sometime and see if it really makes any substantive difference for me. I know! Right? :D

Running previously recorded tracks through "better" preamps?

Ok, thanks fellas! I guess I'd just have to go ahead and try it and see if it actually does (or doesn't) create a sound I want. Yeah, I kind of drew that conclusion myself. All good. I always appreciate peoples advice.

Running previously recorded tracks through "better" preamps?

Here's a question I've always had in the back of my mind. In this thread: https://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=256651 ...a very informative and insightful post by user "nreece" speaks of running mixed/processed drum tracks back through the pre's to sparkle up the sound a bit: 4...

Drummer's Solo Album - Please Help!

Specifically, in regard to mic preamps and other drum-recording topics, check out this thread: https://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=256651 Scroll down and pay particular attention to the posts by nreece. Very informative!

    Taking care of your sound...

Hey Julian, Good question! And a very tough one for anyone, on either side of the FOH board, to answer. What I think (fwiw) is that generally, it's really not worth the trouble to bring the extra gear, soundcheck it and constantly tweak it from your position--which is behind the drums, not...

Drummer's Solo Album - Please Help!

Aidan, I think your test recording sounds really good. As do YOU, my friend! 1) Compression. At the moment I only have the DigiRack compressor, Maxim Limiter and the Massey Mastering Limiter. I'm looking at either buying some decent plugins, or hiring/buying an outboard compressor or two...

Where is the best place to get drum loops?

Oh, and one more thing: You're not going to sit there and SERIOUSLY tell me the keyboard player gets laid before the drummer does! :D

how much of your snare sound should be coming from your overheads?

Thanks man! I really appreciate all of your insight. I always suspected that good (really, really good) mic pres were a big ingredient to a good drum sound, even when some people told me otherwise. Right now I'm in the middle of a home purchase, so I'm afraid the APIs will have to wait...:(...

Where is the best place to get drum loops?

No huge offense taken, ILJ. I can certainly appreciate a good drummer joke! You just have to remember there's a difference between a joke and an insult, and your original post definitely had an insult. OK, enuf o' that! I agree; many software drums sound lousy, hence your original question...

Do I Need Pro Tools To Be Taken Seriously?

I'm no expert... ...but I think you know very well that you don't need to switch to Pro Tools to be taken seriously. Really what your issue seems to boil down to is the format compatibility (or lack thereof) between systems (something about which I know next to nothing), not the perceived...

    micing toms, sm57 or 81?

Also depends on the size of the toms. The 57 is best for smaller toms (13" and under), in fact, IMO it sounds awesome on 10" and 12" toms; still good, though maybe not quite as beefy on larger toms, i.e. floor toms 14" and up. Correct me if I'm wrong, but in my experience (and I own both mics)...

    Home Recording's Dirty Little Secret

I chose option 1, but if I'm being honest, it was a little of all 3. I figured it would be an uphill climb--and huge learning process--when I started doing it. I also had experienced around me (and worked with) MANY people who were doing it, with piss-poor results, and had always thought, "if...

how much of your snare sound should be coming from your overheads?

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but hey, nreece, thank you for all that information! I have a drum room right now with which I've had some similar issues. I've been wondering if I've deadened the room a bit too much, and I think I probably have. I've struggled with getting the snare sound...

Where is the best place to get drum loops?

Thank you Rimshot. I quite agree. You're very insulting towards drummers in your original post. We take our craft--and art--very seriously.

how much of your snare sound should be coming from your overheads?

Or perhaps not close enough? Not there, so I can't be sure. I've always found close mic placement to produce a fatter sound than positioning the mic further away, which usually equals a thinner, more distant sound. Yeah, I'd say you'd get a little less control over your mix that way, but the...
