    What a Friend

A traditional song we all sang in church when I was coming up. I always liked the melody and the sentiment. I’m a Bluegrass banjo player, but lately I’ve been trying to branch out a little bit and mix traditional country Guitar sounds with Banjos and Mandolins and such. I know a lot of people...

    Battle of New Orleans

No bass because we don’t have one in the group. Maybe I’ll add a bass track to the recording tho. Thanks, Bob.

    Battle of New Orleans

This is a bedroom recording of a classic country song that is a crowd favorite at my weekly restaurant gig. I’m hoping I can get our percussionist to replace the canned drums. Comments on the overall arrangement, troublespots, balance, EQ, etc. welcome. Thank you for listening.

    Ok I concede

Having used several different DAW software applications over the years, I think, picking one with plenty of user support and sticking with it is the best solution. I currently use reaper and would not switch unless forced to… not because I have anything against other software, but I don’t want...

Bass Pedal that gives a acoustic bass sound

Here is a snippet of the Fender Ashbory on a Bluegrass instrumental track

Bass Pedal that gives a acoustic bass sound

I just purchased a Fender ashbory bass from a guy on reverb.com to try and get that thump on my recordings. I have watched YouTube videos of people playing these things, and they seem to have that vibe. It arrives next week. I have a short scale Washburn acoustic bass guitar that I have tried...

Sun’s Gonna Shine in My Backdoor Someday (acoustic/folk/bluegrass)

One thing I did not mention is that I just bought one of those Avantone mix cubes and a monitor switch. When I first heard the mix cube, I thought “I just paid hundreds of dollars for an a.m. radio speaker”. But it did reveal some levels that were out of balance. I made a few adjustments, and...

Sun’s Gonna Shine in My Backdoor Someday (acoustic/folk/bluegrass)

The digital clicks seemed to be on the lead vocal track. I used some light auto tune on them just for good measure. When I removed it, the clicking stopped. I redid the tambourine on the last chorus, too.

Sun’s Gonna Shine in My Backdoor Someday (acoustic/folk/bluegrass)

Thank you for all your input. Very helpful. Here is the track with the following changes. 1. Lowered the level of Banjo back up during vocals. (thought I would try that before re cutting the track, and I thought it worked out OK) 2.EQ’d banjo and fiddle to sweeten them up a bit.(Bumped the mid...

    Yes! Good catch!

Sun’s Gonna Shine in My Backdoor Someday (acoustic/folk/bluegrass)

excellent points. I agree wholeheartedly. I think the hand claps were just a little rushed. I went in and muted all of them, and I did not miss them. They won’t be in the final mix. I left the tambourine in, and it seem to grew pretty well and create the build up I want it. As far as the...

Simple is better! Thank you, Dobro, for the listen and the advice.

Sun’s Gonna Shine in My Backdoor Someday (acoustic/folk/bluegrass)

Recording this for a client. Has to have similar instrumentation and arrangement as 1960s Flatt and Scruggs recording, except each chorus needs to build a little more interest. Other limitation is there is no budget to hire other musicians to record tracks. I have to make the best out of what I...

    Cora is Gone

Cora is Gone I’ve been trying to make good Bluegrass type recordings for years. Hardly ever happy with anything. I thought I would step back, simplify, and do it with fewer instruments

Shure SM-7 - EV RE320 mics for voice - maybe helpful comments

As a novice recordist, something I forget to do is play with the mic's switches. You can get a frequency bump and/or a low end roll off on the SM7b. These can make quite a difference. Same kind of thing with another favorite, the Sennheiser 421. The first 421 I ever had, I bought used and...

Advice for an inexpensive second Mic for guitar etc?

Yeah, I know the thread is months old, but I just got a pair of monoprice SDC for $70. I liked them so much, I bought 2 more pairs and 4 hypercardioid capsules. We AB'd one of them at a friend's studio on a nice 100 year old rosewood Washburn parlor guitar with a Neumann KM184, and the...

Rechargeable BATTERIES for those dusty EV Pl76 series Condenser mics

Thanks for this. I bought 4 of those old EVs at $20 each several years ago in zipper pouches. I can't remember the model number without getting into my gear closet, but they will run on 48V or batteries. I don't always have enough channels with 48V, so this may help me. I like the mics and...

    Behringer XM8500

I bought 6 of the XM8500 for my Bluegrass band a few years. They are very good microphones, and you can get 5 for the price of one SM58. I'm cheap and won't pay $100 plus tax for a stage mic that isn't even manufactured in my home country...plus you have to worry about all the counterfeit ones...

Acoustic instruments all recorded with Sennheiser 421

The shortcomings with the rhythm section (bass and tenor guitar) have a lot to do with my playing, the room...and to a lesser degree the instruments themselves. I used to put bass on my recordings with “Trilogy”, but decided to just get a bass and start playing it. There are losses and gains...

Acoustic instruments all recorded with Sennheiser 421

I recorded this yesterday, and I’m fairly pleased with the capture. You guys can rip it up, if you want to, though :) McKinley (Instrumental) I will go back in and add some tasteful background and fills at some point, just so it doesn't sound like a sonic cut out collage. Recorded one at a...
