A weird question on Ribbon Mics

I got some laughs on this site years ago where I showed my guitar cab mixing with a large condenser, a 57 and a ribbon. I had a vocal style pop filter in front of the ribbon and some thought it strange. The reason was the amp was cranked and the wind movement from the speaker could have...

Years of unsolvable (RF?) noise stopping everything.

Back in the 1990’s my studio was across the road from a phone exchange, this caused tons of rf that was in fact transmitted through the actual mains into the house. The phone company sent techs and it was proved by running the guitar amps on a ups system that was unplugged from the mains. They...

    Question about Mineral Wool

The acoustasorb 3 is so dense you can’t roll it up, if you stand it up against the wall it will stay there. Yes I have used it throughout my studio builds as sound proofing, building bass traps and making gobos. The fluffy stuff you have is normal home thermal insulation. Acoustasorb products...

    Question about Mineral Wool

Polyester is the only sound absorber that can be used in hospitals and public venues in Australia for sound control. Its a no brainer to use, no fibers is so good to work with and be around and the stuff works as good as or better than fiberglass. My studio was the fourth I built and I said to...

    Question about Mineral Wool

The rest of the answer, it does cost more than fibreglass, however when making traps and gobos you don’t have to cover it. It will absorb 100hz if you build it into a bass trap, just like high density fibreglass. I live in Australia.

    Question about Mineral Wool

I Used 50mm, where I need thinker I used 2 sheets to make the 100mm, I bought a lot of it and it was easier to stick to the same thickness for flexibility. Its hard to cut, they cut it to size for me with a diamond blade saw. The accoustisorb 2 can be cut with a knife but is not as good with...

Large or small condenser overheads for a bad room with good drums

To answer the question, I have used both large and small condenser mics, I find it depends on what sound you are after, I am always changing my mind but if I listen to the recording 6 months later I could not tell you which I used. I have used 2 x nt1’s as overheads with good results. Currently...

    M3500 and +4 Outs

The normal outs, direct outs on channels, inserts, Sub group outs are all -10dB. There was a balancing option for the M3500 and M3700 that gave you balanced +4 outs, these do sometimes come along second hand, but they are rare. I made a -10 to +4 & +4 to -10 converter (24 Channel) when I moved...
