Some of these high-end consumer open-reel decks from Sony, Akai, Pioneer etc from the mid-late 70s look rather interesting. Interesting specs as well (the Pioneer claims 20-28KHz freq response at 71/2 ips!!!!). Has anybody ever used some of them? Worth a punt at around a 100 bucks?

I read somewhere that racking a dbx noise reduction unit in front of your DAT can improve your dynamic range and prevent quantization noise. Has anybody tried this? I never thought a digital recordr would be able to "read" dbx encoding.....is this even possible?
