Marantz PMD740 Noisy / Dead Channels

Hey All, Been awhile. So I’ve been out of the recording game for a good bit. Went from recording on multiple hand held cassette recorders to boom boxes, vcrs, upgrading to cassette 4-track to 1/2” tape to 1” tape before the kids and career came along. I sold everything but my trusty Marantz...

    Otari MX-5050 8 track 1/2" recorder HELP!

ok, i see what you are saying. i think somehow we are both arguing the same point here :). i could see how my poor wording made it sound like i thought standard xlr cables were only for pin2 stuff--no more late night or early morning posts for me. I just meant that if his stuff was all pin2...

    Otari MX-5050 8 track 1/2" recorder HELP!

good point. i could have worded that better. i meant that standard xlr cables are configured for interfacing "pin 2 hot" pieces of gear, thus no modification to the cable is required if your stuff is pin 2 hot. but i would argue that cables can maintain or change which pin is hot. it won't...

    3 simple questions

you've got it backwards, i think. the configuration of most xlr cables requires no mods for pin2 hot to pin2 hot (or pin3 hot to pin3 hot) interfacing. some equipment (like your otari mx5050) is wired pin 3 hot. most modern gear is pin2 hot. so if you wanted to mod a cable for interfacing...

    Otari MX-5050 8 track 1/2" recorder HELP!

help hi. some of the older (2-track?) mx5050's could take a mic level signal. but usually with this type of machine you need a line level signal such as the signal from a mic pre. the signal straight from a mic is too weak. if nothing else you can connect the line out (NOT speaker out) from...

    what to do?

Here is my understanding. I think that even back when the MX5050 was made it was still kind of an oddball thing to wire with pin 3 hot. It's just that at some point they made wiring pin 2 hot the standard. Most were doing it anyway. So most gear, even pre '93, will be pin 2 hot. if you...

    what to do?

hey. I agree with Daniel. there are scores and scores of threads here and on other forums on the mx5050 you have, on all the topics you could ever need in regards to maintenance, troubleshooting, and setup. there are also scores of PEOPLE using these. AND...you can still get parts. not so...

    thinkin bout goin analog

I think you are making a good decision to go with 1/2" 8. You can definitely do some cool stuff with 1/4" 8 (I am still amazed at what my friend can do with his 388), but I think you will have an easier time with 1/2". May I add to the list the Tascam 48 and 58 and the otari mx5050. the...
