The Journey of the Engineer. I want to hear YOUR story.

Like some of the other, I am an old pro..55 this year. The first thing that comes to mind for me is how far music production and mixing has turned since the days of analog. I remember cutting Inner City Blues with Wah Wah watson ( he was on the road with Marvin for years) at Westlake on Sunset...

if you use all analog outgear, you will get a better sound, just make sure you gain stage at ever place in the chain. And if Hard LR is ginving you better results, go with what your ears hear Jamz. No one is there, and suggestions are just that. No one knows what your instruments sound like or...

    all the lies

you got it gotoboy...when a vocalist cuts a session, i always choose two or three mics side by side and A/B them. But you are right about alot of mics, and thats why most people choose a U87 in the higher range...it fits everything. The 47 and 67 are killer, if you can find a killer one. The...

414...great fricking mic man...want a bass thick vocal for a girl or a guy with a thin voice..try the one with the C12 capsule and use it in hypercardiod..or whatever. I know..414 for vocals yes..the one with the C12 capsule is outstanding. We used to use them for jazz kits, on a figure 8...

forget em Snowman, just ask, ill tell...although we might have to go to some side talk where we can get indepth...the poor guys on this platform who just want to comment are having to put up with the novels i keep writing for answers. Its totally unfair, but i cant help myself. I truly want...

421 is phenomenal for mid punch on a bass cab..use a RE 20 for bottom. If youve got 4 10's, the 421 will get you a ton of punch in the 250 cycle range, where you hear it on small speakers, and in the 800 cycle range where the rock dirt is

    all the lies

ahh rob, but thats not true. You may be arguing against mix capabilities, and unless you have Gennies, you may be right (although mackie make some pretty flat monitors. But you shouldnt base the depth of capability on what you can hear on a set of speakers. It isnt frequency range or presence...

Ill go with a 4050 everytime for a go to mic under $2000..it beats every one in my opinion.

Im sorry jamz for the bleed, the paragraphs wont stay when i post. I dont know why...and some of what i wrote might be out of contexts because it mixed them up. I hope its ok

    all the lies

FIRST, put the mix in mono and separate them while they are sitting right on top of each other. It forces you to think depth, front and back, not just side to side. How? The piano needs to sit in back, so try something like, 3-4db subtract at 1-3k, and put a little more room on it than the...

    all the lies

Those little art tubes are phenomenal for live gigs...the little tube one gives such warmth on a vocal or acoustic..so much better than the undedicated pre's on a mackie mixer. Art actually makes a rack pre that is pretty killer for the price. Let me give you another option if your not going for...

On the Focusrite Red thing. Go for the red 8, because unless your going to have a patchbay where you can use outgear in the mix and use the compressor (which is one of the best made...its the Red 3 comp) it doesnt make sense. To spend that much just to tame peaks when your cutting vocals, you...

    all the lies

I love hearing that Jamz...and I do have to disagree with a post someone made to you..I literally in all my years have never seen one person be unhappy with a U87...for vocals, acoustic, even electric...anything. However, I have seen people buy it expecting something that they didnt get. When i...

    all the lies

The EQ settings I threw at you are always gonna be a slight difference depending on the guitar, mic, and tracking chain. Just remember this, cause its the most important thing you can learn. EQ is just gain, and gain is noisy, so subtractive EQ will always get you the best results. With a tonal...

    all the lies

I will listen to those acoustics on my studio monitors, but from what I heard on computer speakers tells me he has at least a 100 cycle roll-off, hes sucking out the low mids, probably at 300, but he went a little too far with it. Probably a wide Q, so he also cut a huge amount through 600 as...

    all the lies

Jamz, lets take it piece by piece. You can never go wrong with a ribbon mic. When i talk about mic comparisons, I leave ribbons out, because simply, they always sound good on everything, so you cant go wrong owning one. If 700 is too much for the 4050, go with the 4040. I have the 4033, which i...
